The Fine Art of Pouring and Drinking
In most parts of the world drinking alcohol is almost a universal language.
You can step into a bar anywhere in the world, order a beer and get a friendly nod from someone in the bar that approves of your choice in beverage. However, like every language and culture, there are certain rules of etiquette to follow, like in Japan for instance.
So If you are of legal age to drink, grab a cold one (or otherwise a nice cool drink) and let us tell you how it works.
Is it okay to drink in Japan?
First let us examine drinking in Japan.
You will be glad to know that Japan is very open-minded about drinking alcohol. Japan is relatively open-minded about drinking alcohol. Public drinking is generally permitted, and alcohol is deeply woven into Japanese social culture, but that doesn’t mean making a drunken baka (idiot) of yourself in public.
Beware the rule of pouring!!!
If you are sharing drinks with a group of people, the first thing to know is that it is considered very rude to pour your own drink.
It is as if you are robbing some nice person of a gesture of hospitality. Allow someone in the group to pour you a drink and when you see someone with an empty glass, offer to pour them a drink. Example if someone pours you a glass of beer, you can reciprocate by pouring him or her a drink.
If you think about it is a nice friendly gesture. If you don’t want another drink, leave some in your glass rather than emptying it completely.
Keep thy cup full!
It sounds easy but if you are in a group and gets deeply involved in conversation, and it happens that one empty cup leads to a filled cup and you forget to stop drinking, The danger is that if you become deeply involved in conversation, one empty glass can quickly become a refilled glass, and before you know it, you’ve had considerably more to drink than intended.
If you prefer to remain on the tipsy side of the equation, keep an eye on that glass!
