Pokémon's 30th Birthday Bash: A Blu-ray Set the Size of a Poké Ball, a New Movie, and Even a Trip to Space

Pokémon just turned 30, and honestly, the celebrations feel less like a marketing checklist and more like the franchise throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. There’s a new Blu-ray collection, a theatrical movie on the way that ditches Ash entirely, a 22-minute song trying to name-check over a thousand Pokémon, and, somehow a Pikachu plush that’s been to the International Space Station.

Let’s start with the collection, since it’s the one that’ll actually dent your wallet. Amazon has an exclusive $399.99 box set containing all 24 theatrical Pokémon films from 1998 through 2020, that’s over 36 hours of movie-watching packed onto 16 discs. What makes it a bit ridiculous (in a good way) is the packaging: the discs fold out from a booklet tucked inside a nearly 12-inch-tall Poké Ball case. There’s also supposedly a hardcover art book thrown in, though details on that are still thin. Pre-orders are open now, but Amazon hasn’t nailed down a release date yet, so patience may be required.

As for what’s inside: everything from the original Pokémon: The First Movie and Pokémon: The Movie 2000 up through 2020’s Secrets of the Jungle is accounted for. It’s essentially the entire theatrical run in one box, which is either a dream or a storage nightmare depending on how much shelf space you have.

That last film, Secrets of the Jungle, turns out to mark the end of an era rather than just another entry. During the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, the franchise announced its next theatrical film, Pokémon: Wild Card, set for a 2027 release. And here’s the part that’s likely to raise eyebrows: this one isn’t about Ash, Pikachu, Liko, or Roy at all. Instead, the story follows a competitive Pokémon Trading Card Game player and his partner Mimikyu. CloverWorks is producing, with Katsuhiko Kitada directing, and it’s hard not to read this as an attempt to steer the anime somewhere genuinely new, whether longtime fans go along for the ride is another question.

The anniversary hasn’t stayed confined to screens, either. Musician Masayoshi Oishi dropped a 22-minute track called All-stars 1,025, apparently trying to reference every Pokémon revealed so far, hopping between musical styles as it goes. It’s an ambitious, slightly absurd undertaking, the kind of project that only makes sense as an anniversary stunt.

And then there’s the space angle, which might be my favorite detail in all of this: French astronaut Sophie Adenot brought a Pikachu plush dressed in an ESA uniform up to the International Space Station, timed ahead of World Space Week in October. There’s something genuinely charming about a mouse-shaped mascot from a 1996 video game ending up in orbit three decades later.

Between the enormous Blu-ray set, a movie that seems ready to reinvent the anime’s cast, an overstuffed anniversary song, and a plush toy in space, Pokémon’s 30th year is shaping up to be a lot more than a nostalgia lap.

Cowboy Bebop Movie Gets Stunning 4K Remaster for 25th Anniversary

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, also known as Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, is getting a 4K remaster to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Originally released in Japan on September 1, 2001, the acclaimed anime film will return to Japanese cinemas on October 30, with series director Shinichiro Watanabe supervising the remaster.

Set during the events of the original Cowboy Bebop anime, the film follows Spike Spiegel and the Bebop crew as they investigate a dangerous new threat. The 4K release currently has no confirmed international date, although fans worldwide will be hoping for theatrical and physical releases. The anniversary also highlights the enduring legacy of this influential sci-fi anime classic.

One Piece Day 2026: Two New Movies, One of Them Actually Canon (For Once)

One Piece Day 2026 turned out to be a pretty big deal, even by this franchise’s standards. The event marked 29 years since the manga started and 27 years of the anime running, and the headline news was the announcement of two theatrical films: One Piece Film God Valley, coming Summer 2027, and something called One Piece Film Baad, which isn’t due until 2029.

God Valley is the one people are going to be talking about, and for good reason,, it’s set to adapt the God Valley flashback from the Elbaph Arc, which would make it the first canon movie the franchise has ever produced. That’s not a small thing for a series that’s built an entire cottage industry out of one-off, non-canon adventures nobody has to keep track of. A teaser dropped during the event too, though details on Film Baad are still pretty thin; from what’s been said so far, it sounds like it’ll stick to the usual non-canon formula.

There was plenty of other news to soak up as well. The manga has now crossed 600 million copies sold worldwide, which is a genuinely wild number to sit with. A global character poll also pulled in over 13 million votes, Luffy took first place, unsurprisingly, with Zoro and Sanji rounding out the top three (though I’d bet plenty of fans are still annoyed their favorite didn’t crack the podium).

On top of all that, there were fresh updates on Netflix’s live-action Season 3, a handful of musical performances, and events built specifically around the Elbaph Arc. All told, it’s shaping up to be a pretty packed couple of years for the franchise.

Studio Ghibli Debunks Dark My Neighbor Totoro Death Theory

Studio Ghibli has once again rejected the long-running fan theory that My Neighbor Totoro is secretly a story about death. The theory claims Totoro is a death god, while the Catbus supposedly carries Satsuki and Mei’s souls into the afterlife.

The speculation resurfaced after a Japanese television broadcast of Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved 1988 anime film. However, Studio Ghibli previously addressed the theory on its official website, stating there are “absolutely no facts” supporting the idea that Totoro is a god of death or that Mei is dead.

Nippon Television also highlighted the film’s ending, explaining that the girls’ mother leaves hospital and both sisters continue growing up. The supposed missing shadows, meanwhile, were simply considered unnecessary by the animators. People and their weird theories I mean, really?

Anime Is Moving Beyond Traditional Gender Demographics

Anime is increasingly moving beyond traditional gender demographics such as shonen and shojo, with modern titles attracting audiences across the spectrum. As anime becomes more accessible worldwide through streaming platforms such as Crunchyroll and Netflix, fans are increasingly choosing series based on stories, characters, art styles and genres rather than demographic labels.

While shonen and shojo remain important publishing categories, many viewers enjoy both, alongside seinen, josei, slice-of-life, fantasy and other genres. Anime conventions, cosplay and online communities further demonstrate the medium’s broad appeal. As the global anime audience continues growing, the focus is increasingly shifting from who a series was marketed toward to the story it tells and the experiences it offers.

Tapas Shuts Down in 2026 as Manhwa Fans Face Major Change

Manhwa has exploded in popularity worldwide, helped by successful anime adaptations such as Tower of God and Solo Leveling. However, the growing global audience is facing a major change as Tapas, one of North America’s best-known manhwa platforms, prepares to shut down in 2026.

Owned by Kakao Entertainment, Tapas launched in 2012 and became a major destination for English-speaking readers. Kakao Webtoon is also being restructured, with its content moving into the company’s wider platform.

Fans can still access Tapas for now, while alternatives include Webtoon, TappyToon, Manta, Lezhin Comics and Toomics. Solo Leveling and Solo Leveling: Ragnarok remain available through TappyToon and Manta.

One Piece Manga Could Have Four or More Years of Story Remaining

The One Piece manga may have at least four more years of story ahead, although claims about its ending remain speculative. Following One Piece Day 2026, reports suggested creator Eiichiro Oda had discussed a possible ending window. However, reviews of the event’s livestreams have not confirmed those remarks.

Several major story threads remain unresolved, including the final Road Poneglyph, Lodestar Island, Laugh Tale, Imu, Blackbeard, the Void Century and the mystery of the One Piece itself. Oda has also previously predicted shorter timelines for completing the manga, only for the story to continue expanding.

With One Piece Film: God Valley arriving in 2027 and Film Baad planned for 2029, the manga’s conclusion could remain several years away.

Hunter x Hunter Returns to Hiatus After Hisoka’s Big Comeback

Hunter x Hunter has officially entered another hiatus after Yoshihiro Togashi returned with 10 new chapters following a two-year break. Chapter 420 marks the latest pause in the manga, leaving fans waiting for the next instalment of the Succession Contest Arc.

The hiatus arrives just after Hisoka makes another major appearance. While travelling aboard the Black Whale, Hisoka reportedly wipes out an entire casino, although he remains largely separate from the arc’s central conflict.

There is some hope for a shorter wait, as Togashi has reportedly been working on upcoming chapters. The latest return also brought Gon and Killua back after 15 years, while Kurapika appears to be preparing his next move.

Black Bullet Creator Breaks 11-Year Silence With Reboot News

Black Bullet creator Shiden Kanzaki has broken an 11-year silence on X following the announcement of Black Bullet: New World Order. Kanzaki revealed that the intense workload surrounding the 2014 anime adaptation left him severely burned out, causing him to step away from public platforms.

The author reassured fans that he is now doing much better and explained that New World Order has been in development for some time. The original light novels have been revised, with several receiving significant narrative restructuring.

Volumes 1 and 2 of Black Bullet: New World Order will launch simultaneously on November 10, followed by four monthly releases. Kanzaki is also preparing a new story, The Essence of Evil, scheduled for spring 2027.

Japan’s Teenage Manga Readership Is Falling

Japan’s manga culture is facing a significant shift as teenage readership continues to decline. Data from the 2025 E-Book Business Report shows that around 35% of teenage boys read print manga, while 28% read digitally. Among teenage girls, 28% read print manga and 48% consume digital manga.

The decline is striking compared with the 1980s, when manga reached 85% of middle school students and 77% of high school students. Researchers point to rising digital costs, fewer bookstores, declining magazine culture and changing reading habits as contributing factors.

Meanwhile, anime consumption is also evolving, with many younger viewers watching content at increased speeds. Japanese broadcasters are responding with shorter anime episodes.

Nagano Police Recruit Former Professional Soccer Player

Japan’s Nagano Prefectural Police has selected its first successful applicant through a new recruitment programme specifically targeting high-level athletes. The initiative is reportedly the first athlete-focused police recruitment track established by a Japanese police force.

The successful applicant is a man in his 30s who previously played professional soccer and currently competes in a nonprofessional league. He will join the force in April 2027 and complete standard police academy training.

Police officials say athletes can bring valuable qualities to police work, including discipline, teamwork and composure under pressure. The second recruitment round is now accepting applications until October 19, with eligible current and former professional, corporate, national or international-level athletes invited to apply.

Anonymous Donor Gives Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture $5.4 Million in Gold

An anonymous donor has given 35 kilograms of pure gold ingots, valued at 833.74 million yen (about $5.4 million), to Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture. It is the largest individual donation ever recorded in the prefecture.

The Hyogo Prefectural Government plans to sell the gold and use the proceeds for regional development, following the donor’s wishes. The donor first contacted officials in February, with the gold delivered under tight security on September 8. Governor Motohiko Saito announced the donation on September 16. The gift comes as Hyogo faces serious financial challenges, including high debt and rising interest rates.

Luxury Detached Homes Gain Popularity as Tokyo Housing Prices Rise

Rising property prices in Tokyo are driving buyers toward spacious detached houses farther from major train stations. Known as “oku-kodate,” these homes typically cost more than ¥100 million but offer larger plots and living spaces than expensive city-centre micro homes.

Demand is particularly strong for newly built detached houses priced between ¥100 million and ¥150 million. Buyers are attracted by greater privacy, energy efficiency and more space for families. One recent buyer paid ¥120 million for a three-bedroom home near Meidaimae Station, choosing it over a smaller condominium.

With Tokyo’s average newly built detached-home price approaching ¥100 million, developers are expanding supply. Experts predict the average could reach that milestone in 2027.

Aonishiki Targets Yokozuna Promotion at Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament

Ukrainian sumo star Aonishiki enters the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo determined to build on his dramatic July championship and move closer to yokozuna promotion.

The 22-year-old ozeki won his third Emperor’s Cup in July after a three-way playoff, despite competing with injuries to his left ankle and big toe. Those issues have limited his preparation ahead of the 15-day tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Aonishiki returned to training against lower-division wrestlers and remains confident about competing. His remarkable 2026 season has included winning the January championship, losing his ozeki rank and immediately reclaiming it with another title.

Another championship could strengthen his pursuit of becoming the first European-born yokozuna.

Ironmouse Faces AI Controversy Over Fortnite Collaboration

VTuber Ironmouse is facing criticism following her Fortnite collaboration, after previously stating she would not support games made using artificial intelligence (AI). Earlier in 2026, she ended a sponsorship with Perfect World Games’ Neverness to Everness after concerns about AI use in its development. Epic Games, meanwhile, has publicly acknowledged using generative AI tools for Fortnite concept art, character design and environments.

This has led some fans and critics to question Ironmouse’s decision to collaborate with Fortnite. Others argue that her earlier decision was also influenced by claims that developers had misled her about AI use. Ironmouse has not publicly addressed the Fortnite controversy.

Affected titles reportedly include Stellar Blade, Hogwarts Legacy, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Pragmata, 007 First Light and Resident Evil Requiem. Denuvo alleges that the bypass removed DRM protections and enabled pirated game distribution.

China Raises Visa Fees for Japanese Travellers

China is raising visa fees for Japanese nationals travelling to the country, describing the move as a reciprocal response to Japan’s recent fee increase. From Monday, China’s single-entry visa fee will rise from ¥2,250 to ¥16,750, more than seven times the current cost.

The immediate impact is expected to remain limited because Japanese visitors currently benefit from a short-term visa exemption for tourism and business. However, the exemption is scheduled to expire on December 31.

Japan increased its single-entry visa fee for foreign visitors from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 in July. Chinese nationals accounted for 73% of Japan’s visas issued in 2025.

Toei Animation Denies Dragon Ball Theme Park Plans in France

Toei Animation has denied reports that a Dragon Ball theme park will be built in France, stating that no licences have been granted for such a project. France and Saudi Arabia agreed in August to develop three theme parks near Paris, prompting reports that one could feature Dragon Ball.

The planned €6 billion development would be located in Cergy-Pontoise, northwest of Paris. However, neither French nor Saudi officials have officially confirmed a Dragon Ball connection.

The iconic franchise began as Akira Toriyama’s manga in 1984 and has since expanded into anime, films and merchandise. Toei previously announced Saudi Arabia’s first Dragon Ball theme park.

Malaysia Police Detain Six Japanese Nationals Over Suspected Scam

Malaysian police have detained seven people, including six Japanese nationals, over suspected involvement in an online scam targeting Japanese victims. The suspects, aged between 22 and 58, were arrested during a raid on a house in Perak on Wednesday.

Police seized several mobile phones and a laptop from the property, which investigators believe had been used as the group’s base since mid-August.

The arrests come as Southeast Asian countries increase efforts to combat call-centre scam operations. The United Nations has warned that scam groups are increasingly moving into inconspicuous residential properties to avoid detection. Malaysian police are urging landlords to carefully verify potential tenants.

Albanese Faces Backlash Over Japan PM’s Melon Gift

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced criticism over comments and gestures he made while discussing two crown melons gifted by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Former Australian ambassador to Japan Shingo Yamagami described the incident as insulting and argued that the fruit carried cultural significance.

Albanese has rejected the interpretation that his gesture referred to Takaichi’s body, while Australian government ministers defended him. Japan’s ambassador to Australia said Tokyo had been informed that Albanese’s comments were not intended as reported.

The controversy followed Albanese’s earlier apology for remarks about Kylie Minogue made during the same podcast appearance.

Hollywood Targets 49 Piracy Sites in Major Streaming Crackdown

Hollywood copyright owners are intensifying their fight against online piracy, with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) targeting 49 alleged illegal streaming domains in its latest crackdown.

According to TorrentFreak, the MPA filed a DMCA subpoena on behalf of Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) members including Netflix, Disney, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. The request asks Cloudflare to identify operators behind the sites, including anime streaming platforms Miruro and Aniworld.

Miruro’s listed domains reportedly attracted more than 77 million visits in one month, while Aniworld recorded around 23 million. The action also targets piracy networks and clones of 123Movies, FMovies and Pelisflix.

The MPA has separately targeted Discord servers accused of sharing links to pirated movies and television episodes.

Māori Poi Performance at Fushimi Inari Shrine Sparks Backlash

A Māori poi performance outside Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine has sparked criticism from some Japanese social media users, who viewed the performance as disrespectful to the sacred site.

The video features three performers led by Dr Tangaroa Paul, a Māori Media programme leader at Auckland University of Technology. Paul subsequently issued several apologies, acknowledging a lack of understanding about the shrine’s cultural and religious significance.

Fushimi Inari Taisha, established in 711, is Japan’s head Inari shrine and attracts visitors seeking blessings for prosperity, family safety and other wishes. Famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates and fox imagery, the shrine remains an important Shinto place of worship.

The shrine is famous for its fox statues. Foxes are traditionally regarded as messengers of the gods. It is easy to understand why one angry X user tweeted, “I wish a fox would curse you.”

Disrespect for other people’s cultures and customs is appalling, and we at AnimeFanatika condemn what we consider to be disrespectful behaviour shown by Dr Paul and the other performers towards this sacred Japanese site. Sies, man!

Comic Con Africa 2026 Brings Anime, Cosplay and Pop Culture to Johannesburg

Comic Con Africa 2026 transformed the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec into a massive celebration of pop culture from September 24 to 27. Now in its seventh edition, the four-day festival brought together around 70,000 fans for anime, manga, comics, gaming, cosplay, collectibles and more.

Anime and gaming fans had plenty to explore, with dedicated activities, merchandise, artists, tabletop RPGs, trading card games and esports forming part of the event. Cosplay remained one of Comic Con Africa’s biggest attractions, with fans dressing as characters from anime, movies, television, comics and video games.

The convention also welcomed international and local guests, including Christopher Judge, the voice of Kratos from God of War, and several South African actors (Steven John Ward, Alexander Maniatis, Jazzara Jaslyn, Nahum Hughes and Martial T Batchamen.) from Netflix’s live-action One Piece.

Beyond the convention halls, visitors could enjoy K-pop performances, outdoor activities, food villages, gaming competitions and interactive brand experiences. The festival also featured Artist Alley, where fans could discover and support creative talent.

For South African geeks and anime fans, Comic Con Africa continues to provide a space where different fandoms can come together, celebrate their favourite characters and meet fellow fans. With its combination of anime, gaming, cosplay and international entertainment, the 2026 event once again showcased the country’s growing pop-culture community.
