WHY MAKE SCRUNCHIES?

Hey girls and guys, welcome to this tutorial on how to make this very cool leaf charm, inspired by the leaf hat Totoro wears in “My Neighbour Totoro”

THE MAGICAL TOOLS

You will need the following:

  • 1 pair of very sharp scissors
  • red roll of thread and
  • full red bobbin
  • 20 pins needles
  • elastic band
  • small safety pin
  • red material with red lint
  • a sewing machine

STEP 1: MAKING A RED SCRUNCHIE

Start by placing your red material onto the craft table, folding the material to each corner and start to pin a nice straight vertical line. Once you have a very straight vertical line, you’re going to start to cut the strip out with your sharp scissors. It should look like this photo.

After cutting the materials and finished pinning it you are now ready to start sewing with your machine. Better get your bobbin.

STEP 2: WORKING WITH THE SEWING MACHINE

Now people would like to know what a bobbin is?

A bobbin is the sliver round part of the sewing machine on which thread is wound.

Start by lifting your sewing machine foot and place it neatly onto the material. Important to note: When you do start to sew, gently take out the pins every time you get to the beginning of each section because the sewing machine needle can get damaged if it runs over the pin.

Now, if you see materials sticking out its okay, because we are going to get rid of excess pieces of material with your sharp scissors.

Once you finished trimming the pieces off neatly, you will flip the material inside out.

STEP 3: EVERYTHING IS ELASTIC

Its time to use your safety pin and elastic band. Pin the safety pin into your tip of the elastic band and close the pin.

Test the elastic band by pulling on it. If it tears, the pin may get lost in the material.

Put the safety pin in the front part of the material with your right hand and use your left hand to pull it. This technique is called the ‘Caterpillar’. Once you get to end of the material, the transformation will be complete and it will look like a scrunchie, like picture 2.

STEP 4: OMG ITS A SCRUNCHIE

It’s very important to keep the end part very tight by removing the safety pin. Once you have removed it, start to pull the elastic bands together and tie a very tight knot.

STEP 5: YAY ITS SCRUNCHIE TIME

Once you have tied the knot, then overlap both ends of the scrunchie and pin them together with a pin like this.

Get your sewing machine ready and start sewing. I like to go over it twice so that I know it won’t break once I start pulling it.

You can use this next step if you want your scrunchies to look super cool, but you can also use this technique to add any other accessories that your cosplay heart desires. I used the red ribbon on my red scrunchie so that it looks like Harley Quinn’s hair.

You can also use the same steps and techniques when making your blue Harley Quinn scrunchie. All the materials you will need are a blue ribbon and blue lycra fabric

What materials can I use to make scrunchies?

You can use any materials for this super cool scrunchie.

  • White satin material
  • Black and red linen material.
  • Blue stretch lycra material

We hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as we enjoyed making it. Please give us feedback if you would like us to make more in this Harley Quinn series and if you found the tutorial was useful. Nekobara
