March is a lively month in Japan, with several events and festivals that celebrate the arrival of spring and traditional culture. Here are some of the notable events and festivals that take place in Japan in March
Omizutori (Water-Drawing Festival): Held at Todaiji Temple in Nara, Omizutori is one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist festivals. The highlight is the nightly fire rituals where monks swing torches from the temple balcony. It’s believed that the sparks from the torches have the power to ward off evil and bring good luck.
Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival): Also known as Girls’ Day or Doll’s Day. Families with daughters display ornamental dolls representing the emperor, empress, and courtiers on tiered platforms covered with red carpeting. It’s a day to pray for the health and happiness of girls in the family.
Momo no Sekku (Peach Blossom Festival): Also known as Boys’ Day. Families with sons display warrior dolls and decorate with symbols of strength and success to pray for the well-being and future success of their sons.
Held in Kyoto throughout April, including March, Miyako Odori is a traditional dance performance by geiko (geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha). The dances feature beautiful kimono, cherry blossoms, and traditional music, providing a glimpse into Kyoto’s cultural heritage.
