Your First Step
Into Anime

Over 100 years of stories, characters and worlds. We’ll help you find exactly where to begin.

What Is Anime?

Think of your favourite cartoon, the kind that pulls you in with wild action, real emotions, and stories that actually go somewhere. Now imagine that, but with decades of craft, creativity, and cultural depth behind every frame. Anime is animation made in Japan. The word itself just means “animation” in Japanese, so in Japan, every cartoon from Peppa Pig to Dragon Ball is called anime. Outside Japan, though, the word specifically refers to Japanese animation, and that’s what we’re talking about here. What makes anime different? It’s storytelling. Anime takes on big, meaningful themes, friendship, loss, courage, identity, destiny in ways that stay with you long after the credits roll. It can make you laugh out loud, glue you to your seat, or quietly bring tears to your eyes. Sometimes all in one episode. The best news? It comes in every genre imaginable. Whatever you love watching, there is almost certainly an anime made exactly for you.

THE GREAT DEBATE

SUBBED OR DUBBED?

One of the first questions every new anime fan faces. Both are completely valid and here’s what they mean and what to expect.

SUBBED

The original Japanese audio plays, with subtitles in your language at the bottom of the screen. You read while you watch. Bear in mind that sometimes Western ideas influence the translation, thus things may get added or taken away from the original anime.

  • Original voice performances

  • Emotional nuance intact

  • Episodes often released first

  • Huge subtitle language selection

vs

DUBBED

Voice actors re-record all dialogue in your language. You hear the story in English (or another language) without reading. Bear in mind that sometimes Western ideas influence can the translation, thus things may get added or taken away from the original anime.

  • No reading required

  • Great for multitasking

  • Modern dubs are excellent quality

  • Perfect for younger viewers

🎌 Neither is wrong. Anime fans have debated this for decades, and the real answer is: watch however you enjoy it most. We all love anime. That’s what matters.
