Anime and Manga Piracy Thrived in North America Due to Access Issues... Now, Japan Is spending Millions to Shut It Down

Anime and manga piracy once helped international fans access content blocked by region locks and licensing gaps. Today, as major platforms like Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu dominate the scene, Japan is cracking down hard. Authorities have arrested leakers, and a new ¥300 million AI program aims to detect and remove pirated material across 1,000+ sites.

Despite these efforts, accessibility remains an issue, many fans still face content barriers. To truly defeat piracy, Japan must improve global availability, ensuring fans can support creators legally while still enjoying the stories they love.

When Two Legends Collide: Watanabe and Stahelski Join Forces for Lazarus

When Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichirō Watanabe needed action help for his new anime Lazarus, he reached out to John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s team at 87eleven. Stahelski didn’t just offer advice, he volunteered himself. A longtime anime fan, Stahelski saw the project as a dream come true.

He brought in top talent from his team, collaborating weekly with Watanabe to design breathtaking, meaningful fight scenes. Their creative chemistry resulted in a yearlong partnership where East met West in the most stylish way possible, action that moves with purpose and visual storytelling that speaks in every frame.

Texas Bill Threatens Anime: A Call to Action for Fans

Anime and manga fans in Texas face a serious threat from Senate Bill 20, introduced by Republican Pete Flores. While claiming to combat child pornography, the bill’s vague language targets any material “appearing” to depict minors, real or animated, as obscene, risking a minimum 5-year sentence for possession. This could ban countless legitimate works, including beloved titles like Dragon Ball.

Though Democrats have stalled the bill, they remain a minority. If passed, SB20 could set a dangerous precedent across the U.S. Texan fans must contact lawmakers now to defend freedom of expression and prevent sweeping censorship.

Despite the risks, footage spread rapidly online. The Infinity Castle Arc premieres July 18 in Japan and hits U.S. theatres September 12. Fans are urged to respect copyrights and avoid skelm recordings.

MangaDex klapped by Massive DMCA Takedown Affecting 700+ Titles

MangaDex, one of the largest manga scanlation sites online, has been impacted by a major DMCA takedown issued on May 14, 2025. Over 700 manga titles have been affected, marking one of the platform’s most significant legal blows. Several Japanese publishers were behind the request, but MangaDex has yet to respond officially.

While its X account posted unrelated updates, the future of the site remains unclear. This incident underscores the growing clash between fan-led scanlation efforts and Japan’s intensified copyright enforcement, highlighting the importance of supporting legal manga platforms to aid creators and protect content.

In a surprising twist, Jujutsu Kaisen clinched the top spot in 2024’s manga sales, outselling One Piece with 7.61 million copies to Oda’s 5.25 million. Despite One Piece’s enduring popularity, Jujutsu Kaisen surged ahead, likely boosted by its emotional final chapters and a gripping anime adaptation by Studio MAPPA. Prophecy or Panic? Manga Sparks Tourism Dip Amid Disaster Fears

A 1999 manga, The Future I Saw by Ryo Tatsuki, predicted a “big disaster in March 2011”, eerily aligning with the Tōhoku tsunami. Now, its 2021 edition warns of another catastrophe on 5 July 2025. The result? Tourism jitters. Greater Bay Airlines in Hong Kong cut Japan-bound flights, citing a 30% drop in bookings, fuelled by both the manga and a feng shui expert’s earthquake warning.

Japanese officials call the claims unfounded, but online reactions range from sceptical to amused. While many dismiss it as fear-mongering, others wonder… what if lightning strikes twice? Ryo Tatsuki, is he a manga Nostradamus that goois ink like a sangoma goois the bones?

Rice Scandal Boils Over: Eto Resigns, Koizumi Steps In

Japan’s Agriculture Minister Taku Eto resigned after sparking outrage by saying he doesn’t buy rice because he receives so much from supporters, a comment seen as tone-deaf amid skyrocketing rice prices. The backlash dealt a klap to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, already under fire over cost-of-living concerns. Replacing Eto is Shinjiro Koizumi, a popular former environment minister.

Known for introducing the plastic bag charge, Koizumi now faces the serious task of addressing Japan’s rice crisis. While some online joked about him charging for rice bags next, others hope he brings fresh solutions. Eto’s resignation marks a major scandal ahead of a crucial election, with public trust in Ishiba’s government continuing to falter.

Japan to Cut Childbirth Costs in Bid to Tackle Falling Birthrate

Japan’s health ministry plans to scrap out-of-pocket costs for childbirth, possibly starting April next year, in a major step to counter the country’s plummeting birthrate. A new policy, approved by experts, would bring normal deliveries under public health insurance for the first time. Currently, only cesarean sections qualify as medical procedures.

Though a ¥500,000 childbirth allowance exists, rising delivery costs—averaging ¥518,000 often exceed this. If the change is implemented, prices would be unified nationwide, though some doctors warn it could impact their finances. The reform comes as Japan celebrates Children’s Day amid a grim statistic: children now make up just 11.1% of the population, with fewer than 14 million aged 14 or younger—the lowest in modern Japanese history…

Tiny Island Aims for Big Manga Dreams

With just 11 residents, Takaikamishima in the Seto Inland Sea is reinventing itself as the “manga island of the world.” In April, the island opened a manga school to revive its dwindling community. Founded by locals Sadamu Kimura and Osamu Hasebe, and supported by renowned manga creators like Takatoshi Yamada, the project has transformed abandoned buildings into art canvases.

The school offers lessons from famous artists, hoping to inspire future mangaka and attract new residents. With nature, nostalgia, and creativity in abundance, Takaikamishima invites aspiring artists to draw not only characters, but also a new future for the island.

Russian Tourist Boom in Japan

A record 18,800 Russian tourists visited Japan in March, up 1.8 times from last year, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. In Tokyo’s Asakusa, Russians shopped in kimonos and savoured sushi and matcha. Many brought cash due to sanctions affecting Russian credit cards. Japan’s simplified visa process, now quicker and requiring fewer documents, has drawn increasing interest, with 12,000 visas issued in March alone.

Despite no direct flights, Chinese carriers help Russians reach Japan affordably. Analysts say Japan’s welcoming atmosphere offers relief from international tensions, making it an attractive destination amid growing discontent and stress within Russia.

Japan’s “Ice Age Generation” Faces Grim Retirement

Japan’s “employment ice age generation,” now in their 40s and 50s, risks falling into poverty in old age despite basic pension eligibility. Many entered the workforce between 1993 and 2004 during economic stagnation, often in unstable, low-paying jobs. Gaps in pension payments and slow pension growth, compared to inflation, mean many will rely on welfare.

Experts urge boosting basic pension levels and offering housing support. With high rates of unmarried individuals, shared elderly housing with care services could reduce loneliness, living costs, and public welfare strain as this generation ages into their 70s and 80s by 2057.

Japanese restaurant chain installs tip boxes in response to foreign tourists leaving tips, sparks debate

Tipping is not customary in Japan, where restaurant prices already account for service and good hospitality is expected without extra payment, making tipping feel awkward or unnecessary.

However, beef cutlet chain Gyukatsu Motomura has introduced tip boxes in response to foreign tourists attempting to tip, sparking debate among locals who fear this could erode Japan’s no-tip dining culture and increase pressure on both diners and restaurant staff.

Employment rate of university graduates in Japan hits 2nd highest in decades

A Japanese government survey reports that 98% of university graduates found employment as of April 1, marking the second-highest rate in nearly 30 years despite a slight overall dip from last year.

The labour ministry attributes the strong hiring trend to ongoing labour shortages and notes that support will continue for graduates still seeking jobs.

Trump Proposes 100% Tariff on Foreign Films Amid Trade Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on foreign-made films, citing national security concerns and efforts to protect domestic movie production. The proposal, shared via Truth Social, aims to counter foreign incentives that draw film work away from the U.S. Anime fans are left uncertain, as many anime are co-produced internationally.

The tariff’s scope and legality remain unclear, especially with current WTO moratoriums on digital tariffs. Meanwhile, broader tariffs on imports from countries like China and Japan are already in motion, affecting toys, figures, and other merchandise tied to pop culture industries.

The Vtuber scene and its antics

How Phase Connect Dodged the VTuber Drama Curse

VTubers and their agencies are often drama magnets, and many VTuber corporations have come and gone, some due to budget issues, mismanagement, or the naïve belief that running an idol group would be easier than it actually is. Yet, Phase Connect has endured. So what’s their secret? Here’s what Yui Tachibana and fans have to say about the company’s strong reputation.

Some fans point to Phase Connect’s Canadian roots, suggesting that its Western work environment and management culture set it apart from stricter Japanese or Asian counterparts. Others credit the company’s willingness to learn and adapt over time, creating a more inclusive and resilient environment for its talents.

Many also believe it boils down to sincerity. While the Phase girls do have behind-the-scenes restrictions, they generally seem free to be themselves. They’re not shoehorned into trends or pressured to play the latest hot game. For example, Dizzy can stream a full session explaining how she does her nails, and hundreds of fans (mostly men) will happily watch, drawn in by her genuine passion and charm.

Some fans even joke that Phase Connect’s real secret is that it’s a coffee company that just so happens to have VTubers. Whatever the truth may be, one thing’s clear: authenticity, adaptability, and maybe a little caffeine have helped keep Phase Connect thriving where others have faltered.

Non-Biting Midges Swarm Expo Venue, Stirring Debate

Visitors to the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo have reported swarms of tiny insects resembling miniature mosquitoes, later identified as chironomids or “non-biting midges.” These bugs, initially noticed around sunset on the Grand Ring’s upper deck, have now spread to lower areas and pavilions near the water. While harmless, their presence has triggered a flood of social media complaints.

In response, Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura contacted Earth Chemical for pest control. The move sparked debate, with some questioning the ethics of exterminating non-aggressive insects and whether chemical intervention contradicts the Expo’s nature-friendly theme. Others suggested natural predators like fish as alternatives.

Tourists Say Japan Is a Joy, With a Few Hiccups

Japan’s tourism boom continues strong, with most foreign visitors reporting overwhelmingly positive experiences. In a 2024 survey of 4,189 travellers at major airports, 51.1% said nothing had bothered them, up from 29.7% in 2023. Common complaints included scarce trash bins (21.9%), language barriers (15.2%), and overcrowded attractions (13.1%).

Some struggled with public transport navigation (12.3%) and unclear multilingual signage (10.8%). A few mentioned immigration delays (8.6%) and limited free Wi-Fi (6.1%). Despite these minor issues, the findings suggest that better-informed tourists are arriving prepared, and most leave with happy memories and few, if any, regrets.

Japan Sees Record Surge in Foreign Students

Japan now hosts a record 336,708 foreign students, a 20.6% increase from the previous year, according to 2024 data from the Japan Student Services Organization. The largest group (107,241) are studying Japanese language, with notable growth in specialised schools and junior colleges. China leads in student numbers, followed by Nepal and Vietnam.

Contributing factors include Japan’s affordable living costs, a weak yen, expanding global outreach by Japanese companies, and growing openness to hiring foreign talent. With strong academic infrastructure and clear career pathways, Japan is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for international students seeking long-term opportunities.

Okinawa’s Enduring Love Affair with Spam

Spam, the American canned pork and ham brand, has held a special place in Okinawan cuisine since WWII. Though it originated as military rations, Spam became a beloved ingredient in Okinawa, famously starring in onigiri and local dishes.

A viral tweet recently reignited interest, claiming Okinawa once ranked third worldwide in Spam consumption, behind only the U.S. and UK. While that data dates back to 2004, the island’s devotion remains strong. From convenience store shelves to traditional foods, Spam thrives in Okinawa, blending foreign roots with local flavour in ways that continue to charm locals and visitors alike.

New Law Targets Host Club Exploitation of Women

A new Japanese law aims to protect women pressured into prostitution to repay host club debts. Host clubs, where women pay to drink with charming men, often blur the line between emotional manipulation and companionship. Some hosts exploit customers’ feelings, urging them to spend more with promises of affection.

When debts mount, women are sometimes pushed into adult work or prostitution. The revised Entertainment Business Law bans coercion through false romantic claims and outlaws “scout back” referral schemes. Violators face fines or jail. The law, taking effect in June, marks a significant step toward curbing abuse in the nightlife industry.
