Hello Kitty Isn’t a Cat?!
Did you know that Hello Kitty, the beloved icon with the red bow, isn’t actually a cat?
That’s right. After decades of being adored as a kawaii feline, she stepped out of the closet (so to speak) to reveal a surprising truth: she’s a little girl.
The Hello Kitty Revelation
This revelation came to light when anthropologist Christine R. Yano was curating a Hello Kitty retrospective for the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. According to her, and confirmed by Sanrio:
“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it is called Charmmy Kitty.”

Who is Hello Kitty really?
Her official bio tells us her real name is Kitty White. She’s as tall as five apples, weighs about three, and is a bright little girl with a heart of gold. She loves baking cookies, playing the piano, and dreams of becoming either a poet or a pianist. With a gift for music and English, and a soft spot for Mama’s apple pie, Kitty lives just outside London with her twin sister Mimmy.
She’s perpetually in the third grade, and despite turning 40 years old, she never really grows up. Her birthday? November 1st, making her a Scorpio with blood type A.
The Kitty, the mystery!
Why is this sweet British girl portrayed as a cute, mouthless cartoon cat? That’s a mystery only Sanrio can truly answer. But one thing’s for sure—this girl has been places. In fact, she even went to space aboard the Hodoyoshi-3 satellite, peeking out a tiny window as a 4-cm figurine, waving down at us Earthlings.
