The destruction sequences got more attention than in the manga. Taguchi’s a big kaiju and disaster-movie fan, and it shows: buildings don’t just collapse, they seem to groan first. Flashbacks lean into a deliberately aged, 1970s-inspired look to separate time periods.

Gundam Absolute Impact Figures Bring Strike Freedom to Life

Solo Leveling Season 3: Crunchyroll Trailer Edit Sparks Fan Speculation
Solo Leveling fans were surprised when Crunchyroll quietly removed “S3” from the trailer for Solo Leveling: Beyond the System. The original Crunchyroll version reportedly ended with “Solo Leveling S3 / The Movie,” unlike the Aniplex and Sony versions, which simply read “Solo Leveling / The Movie.”
Screenshots and reaction videos preserved the original wording, prompting speculation that the film could represent Season 3. Crunchyroll has offered no explanation. However, D&C Media has indicated that Solo Leveling Season 3 is in production, targeting 2027–2028. Meanwhile, Beyond the System will continue the story after Season 2.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 4 Will Have Just 10 Episodes
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 4 – The Calamity has received a surprising episode-count update. Hulu has confirmed that the final season will consist of just 10 episodes, making it shorter than previous parts. While some fans are disappointed, the reduced length could benefit the anime’s production quality.
With the studio able to focus resources on crucial battles, character moments and story developments, The Calamity could deliver a stronger finale. Michael Donovan
Michael Donovan, known for voicing Ryoga Hibiki in the original English dub of Ranma ½ and Master Roshi in Ocean Group’s Dragon Ball, has died aged 72. According to SAG-AFTRA’s 2026 summer magazine, Donovan died on March 4, 2026.
His passing was publicly revealed months later by fellow voice actor Ian James Corlett. Donovan’s work remains memorable among fans of classic English-dubbed anime.
Katsushi Murakami
Mechanical designer and toy creator Katsushi Murakami died on July 20 at age 83 after reportedly experiencing poor health. Born in Gifu in 1942, Murakami worked on numerous anime, including Space Adventure Cobra, Reideen the Brave, Gold Lightan, and Macross II. He began his career at Bandai in 1961 before joining subsidiary Popy, where he helped design the iconic Chogokin robot toy line.
Murakami also created toys for popular tokusatsu and sentai productions, including Kamen Rider. His influential mechanical designs and toy innovations left a lasting legacy across Japan’s anime, mecha, and collectible industries.

Yoko Umezu
Manga artist Yoko Umezu, illustrator of Vermeil in Gold, died on July 7, 2026, aged 36, following a stroke. The news was announced by Monthly Shōnen Gangan on August 12.
Umezu’s artwork reached international audiences through the manga’s 2022 anime adaptation. Vermeil in Gold concluded with its July 2026 chapter. Her work leaves a lasting legacy.

Weekly Shonen Jump Falls Below 1 Million Print Copies
Weekly Shonen Jump remains Japan’s biggest manga magazine, but its print circulation has fallen below one million copies for the first time since 2008. According to the latest Japan Magazine Publishers Association data, the magazine averaged 985,000 copies per week between April and June, marking a 1.9% decline.
That figure is dramatically lower than its 1994 peak of 6.53 million copies. Despite the decline, Weekly Shonen Jump remains far ahead of competitors such as Weekly Shonen Magazine. The shift largely reflects Japan’s growing preference for digital manga, highlighting changing reading habits rather than declining interest in manga itself.

Japanese company Ohtani Design Laboratory has launched V-Nade!, an interactive technology that lets fans virtually pet their favourite VTubers. Part of the Teno-Verse entertainment system, the experience uses hand-tracking sensors rather than controllers, gloves or touchscreens.
Users simply move their hand above a sensor, with an on-screen hand mirroring their stroking gestures. During supported events, VTubers can see where fans are interacting, creating a more personal experience.
V-Nade! can also work with anime and video game characters, making it suitable for fan events, cafés, exhibitions and theme parks. The technology highlights Japan’s growing interest in immersive VTuber experiences.
Yuzuki Roa Reaches Settlement After Five-Year VTuber Legal Battle
NIJISANJI VTuber Yuzuki Roa has reached a settlement in a long-running defamation case involving streamer Narukami Sabaki. ANYCOLOR announced the settlement on August 13, bringing an end to a legal dispute that began after allegations in 2020 accused Roa of bullying fellow VTuber Kingyozaka Meiro.
The case ultimately found no evidence that Roa had bullied or pressured Meiro, or that her contract termination was connected to Roa. The settlement includes a formal apology from the streamer.

Anime Fan Arrested After Making ¥4.3 Billion in Unpaid Orders
An Osaka restaurant worker has been arrested after placing more than ¥4.3 billion (US$27 million) worth of unpaid orders through Shueisha’s Jump Character Store over roughly two years. The 32-year-old allegedly exploited convenience-store prepayments by never completing transactions and repeatedly refused cash-on-delivery packages. To avoid detection, she reportedly created 238 customer accounts.

Japanese craft beer brand Yona Yona Ale has created a clever Furatsuku Beer Glass designed to encourage responsible drinking. The unusual glass has two compartments: one for beer and one for water. When both contain similar amounts, the glass stays upright.

Japan’s workplace culture is known for politeness, but some traditional business customs are increasingly viewed as unnecessary stress. A survey of 493 Japanese workers identified five workplace manners employees would happily abandon.
Rigid email etiquette ranked first at 21.5%, followed by apologizing for taking holidays and bringing snacks (15.4%), overly formal workplace messaging (11%), excessive greetings (9.1%), and mandatory souvenirs after trips (4.7%).
Respondents cited mental fatigue, wasted time and extra effort as major drawbacks. However, many hesitate to abandon these customs because of workplace pressure and fear of appearing rude or uncooperative.

Father Leaves 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mount Fuji Hiking Trail
A 7-year-old boy was left alone on Mount Fuji after his father decided to continue hiking with his older son. The family had been climbing the Fujinomiya Trail when the younger child became tired near the sixth station. His father reportedly told him to wait while continuing towards the summit.
A mountain hut worker later found the boy sitting alone and contacted police. Officers located the father near the eighth station and ordered him to return. The child was unharmed, but rain and fog were developing. Police warned hikers never to abandon struggling members of their group.

More than 4,000 anime and manga fans gathered in Nairobi for Otamatsuri, one of Africa’s biggest cosplay conventions. The event celebrated Japanese pop culture while giving Kenyan fans a space for creativity, friendship and self-expression.

Building caretaker and cosplay champion Julius Mokaya uses cardboard and discarded materials to craft detailed costumes, while competition winner Yvonne Chockey created Angewomon’s impressive wings from shaped PVC pipes.
Beyond cosplay competitions, Otamatsuri provides a community where like-minded fans can connect. The growing convention demonstrates how anime and manga are inspiring creativity and cultural connections across Kenya.
