Monthly Anime Challenge

Don’t know what to watch then our monthly challenge is here to help you. Sometimes something nostalgic and sometimes a series that will fit in with the theme of the month. We especially like October… HALLOWEEN! 

Check in every week to see which episodes to watch of the current series. Usually no more than 3 episodes and easy to fit into the busiest schedule. Don’t forget to go view our events page to see when we will have our next anime day.

May 2022 Recovery Of An MMO Junkie (Net-juu no Susume)

Our anime is about 30-year-old Moriko Morioka, a successful but stressed office worker in a corporate capacity. She decides to quit her job, which she had for 11 years. She discovers MMORPGs and joins an online game called Fruits de Mer, and starts playing as the male hero ‘Hayashi’. Little does she know that somewhere in the same city a timid 28-year-old office worker named Yuuta Sakurai also joins the game with his Avatar Lily. Their new lives both in-game and IRL (in real life) begins, an adventurous journey we are bound to enjoy watching.

April 2022 Bagel Girl

Imagine this, you are a 26 overweight loner who collects the Anime girl’s figurines as a hobby, plays games when he comes home after a part-time job, and one morning you wake up transformed during your sleep as a Bagel girl (woman with a baby face and glamorous body)! This is what happens to poor Bong Gi. Embarrassed by the sudden change he asks the internet for help and meets a cute and cheerful girl in an online chatroom that offers to help. He falls for her but quickly finds out there is a complication she is the younger sister of his arch-nemesis.

March 2022 Spiritpact

Spiritpact is an action/supernatural anime that follows the adventures of failed exorcist You Keika and the head of a power exorcist family Ki Tanmoku as they take on various challenges in the spirit world, and try to find out more about the bond they share. It all starts with You Keika’s untimely and mysterious death in a junkyard and the pact he makes with exorcist Tanmoku.

February 2022 Black Jack

People turn to Black Jack, the doctor when they have no hope left. Even animals like a killer whale… yes a killer whale… Well, he likes dealing with medical cases not very well known, which can be strange, dangerous, or not known at all… He rarely gets recognition; often curing the poor and destitute for free, or teaching the arrogant a lesson in humility. He is actually the good guy anti-hero type because he’s is a modern-day Robin Hood with a scalpel, that charges his rich patients’ enormous fees, that really hurts their pockets, but treats the poor for free.

January 2022 The Rising of Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari)

Book otaku Iwatani Naofumi discovers a book in the library that summons him to another world. He finds himself joined up with the spear, sword and bow as one of the Four Cardinal heroes, fighting the waves of the Catastrophe as the Shield Hero. Excited by the notion of adventure, he sets off only to be betrayed days later losing all his money, dignity, and respect. What will happen to this young warrior who lost everything?

December 2021 Flying Witch

November 2021 Harem Movies

This month we host a short Harem Anime Movie challenge. Each week we will showcase a movie and the challenge is to watch that movie and the challenge reward is bragging rights that you watch that movie. Let’s have fun with our Harem Anime Movie Challenge!

October 2021 Anime Horror Movie

Our October anime challenge will evoke the Halloween spirit this month as we watch an anime horror movie each week. The movies we will showcase this month are Dante’s Inferno, Lady Death, Vampire Hunter D, and Ninja Scrolls. Some old classics and others newer and just as scary. So ready the popcorn, clear the throats to scream more beautifully and enjoy some of the best horror anime has to offer. If you don’t scream once during this challenge, either from delight or fear, suffer a horror otaku nosebleed or eat your hat then it will be a Halloween miracle.

September 2021 Vampire Knight

The main protagonist is Yuki Cross a human girl, whose earliest memory is about a stormy night in winter, ten years ago, when a vampire attacked her and she was rescued by another vampire named Kaname Kuran. Everything before that night is a blur and she cannot remember.

Yuki is the adoptive daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, a school for human students by day and vampire students at night. Yuki is in love with the mysterious vampire that rescued her. As the series progress, she starts remembering her past, suffering from hallucinations and her mind sinks into darkness and corruption, which forces Kaname to awaken her and lead her to her true identity.

August 2021 Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai (Censored)

The series is set 16 years after Japan’s “Law for Public Order and Morals in Healthy Child-Raising” which banned coarse language. Tanukichi Okuma enrols in the country’s leading elite public morals school and is blackmailed into joining an obscene terrorist organization hellbent on the destruction of everything that his new school stands for.

July 2021 Cowboy Bebop

A definite anime classic, Cowboy Bebop is a space western that follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters trying their best to survive day-to-day on their spaceship called the Bebop. The crew consists of five very different people: Spike Siegel, a retired and exiled hitman; Jet Black, an ex-officer of the Inter Solar System Police, retired thanks to the loss of his arm; Faye Valentine, a con artist suffering from amnesia due to the fact that she was in cryogenic hibernation for a long time; Edward, a preteen genius hacker girl; and Ein, a hyper-intelligent, genetically-engineered dog.

June 2021 How Not to Summon a Demon Lord

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord tells the story of Takuma Sakamoto, a hikikomori gamer who is mysteriously teleported to his favourite MMORPG, Cross Reverie, appearing as his own character avatar in the game, the demon lord Diablo. The two girls that summoned him the cat girl Rem and the elf Shera attempt to use a spell on him to make him their slave but due to the ability of Takuma’s magic ring, the spell bounce and they turn up with salve collars on their necks, becoming his servants instead. Part of the storyline is him travelling with the girls to find a way to get rid of the slave collars around their necks while helping them with the personal issues that made them summoning him in the first place.

May 2021 Folktales from Japan

Folktales in Japan reminds you of oral traditions. All over the world mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and teachers tell us myths and legends part of our folklore. Each tale has an underlining truth to be learned. Stories like the boy born from the peach, the old man that makes the cherry tree blossom and stone soup touches our imagination and keeps a little magic alive in all of us. This month we explore the magic by watching Folktales From Japan.

April 2021 Cheating Craft

In the world of Cheating Craft, academic success decides your entire future, and the classroom is a ruthless battlefield. If you pass examinations, your future is guaranteed, while failing leads to a life of cruelty, torment and despair. To survive and stay alive you must be cunning or intelligent, either study your butt off or have the perfect cheating strategy. We follow the exploits of cheater Zhuge Mu Ming. What will be his destiny?

March 2021 Two Car

It tells the tale of two girls who enter the competitive world of motorcycle sidecar racing. Girlish, slender Yuki is the driver that controls the accelerator and brake, the daughter of a family that runs a guesthouse and the boyish and impulsive Megumi uses her acrobatic skills and body weight to handle the corner work. Her family runs an inn. Our two heroines will battle it out on the racing tracks with other motorcycle sidecar teams from all over Japan.

February 2021 BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad

In the anime we meet 14-year old Koyuki, a boy going through life without goals which change after he meets a weird-looking dog named Beck, saving it for being harassed by a group of kids. He then meets the dog’s owner, 16-year-old guitar slinger Ryuusuke ‘Ryu’ Minami, the former member of a popular rock band, and Koyuki’s life changes forever.

January 2021 Omamori Himari

This romantic comedy with harem and supernatural elements centres around 16-year-old orphan Youto Amakawa, a boy protected by the spirit of a beautiful, sword-wielding samurai catgirl named Himari. See Youto is descendant of a family Demon Slayers since the feudal eras in Japan and Himari is his new guardian and she swore an oath to protect him from evil. Oh, and by the way, he is allergic to cats…

December 2020 Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudō)

It is the perfect anime challenge for December. It is about a restaurant somewhere in Tokyo that specializes in Western cuisine, Mondays to Fridays. On Saturdays, however, it is closed to the public but then it is when a dimensional door opens and beast-men, lizardmen, swordsmen, wizards, shape-shifting dragons, treasure hunters and other fantasy world surprises go to the restaurant ‘Western Restaurant Nekoya’ to eat from its exquisite menu.

November 2020 Death Note

Light Yagami, a high school student discovers a supernatural notebook, the Death Note, that was dropped on Earth by a Shinigami (a god of death) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face they know. All you have to do is write the name of the person you want dead in the book while visualising their face. 

The series revolves around Light’s attempt to use the notebook to create and rule a world “cleansed of evil”, with his cast as a type of ‘god’, and the efforts of a detective known as L to stop him. In the first few episodes, criminals start dying one by one and fear falls in the criminal world like a dark rain. People become too afraid to commit a crime, rumours float around about Kira, a name for this unseen murderer of criminals. Light decides to adopt this name to sow his seeds of fear. Throughout this, the Shinigami Ryuk watches with amusement as Light plans and executes these criminal deaths by writing them in the notebook, playing a cat and mouse game with the authorities and L, staying a step ahead of them as they try to catch “Kira”.

October 2020 Dororo

In Dororo a Samurai’s newborn baby boy miraculously survives even after a samurai bartered away the baby’s organs to 48 demons in exchange for dominance on the battlefield. Abandoned, a medicine equips the baby with primitive prosthetics with which the wronged son will use to hunt down those demons to reclaim his body, piece by piece, until one day he will confront his father.

September 2020 That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is not your normal fantasy isekai. It tells the story of Satoru Mikami, a thirty seven year old mundane man in a dead end job that dies after a robbery gone badly. He gets a second chance in life by being reincarnated as, we kid you not, a low-level slime in a fantasy world. (Some people really have weird karma!). He has to deal with his new oozing existence by being a monster, and like a rock thrown into a pond, his life will cause ripples that will change that fantasy world forever.

August 2020 Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss is set in a world where the whole world was explored except for a massive bottomless chasm named The Abyss, a place filled with relics and artefacts. Our hero is Rico, a 12-year-old orphan with a dream to become as famous an explorer like her late mother. The Abyss hides artifacts and remnants of a civilization long gone, making it a popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake dangerous adventures into the mist-filled depths to recover whatever relics they can find. Returning from the Abyss can be dangerous as “the Curse of the Abyss,” a mysterious and potentially fatal malady, manifests upon ascension. One fateful day she meets Regu, a strange robot boy who may just be the one who helps her reach her dream … if they can survive, that is…

July 2020 Snow White with the Red Hair (Akagami no Shirayukihime)

Our July anime challenge is Snow White with the Red Hair (Japanese title Akagami no Shirayuki-hime). The anime is a heartwarming show about a red-haired herbalist called Shirayuki. The prince in the kingdom where she lived becomes so obsessed with her and her red hair (which is very rare in that world, it seems) that she is forced to flee her country. While fleeing, she makes a friend with a man who helps her who happens to be a prince. He aids her and she decides to become a royal herbalist at his court.

June 2020 Death Parade

In Death Parade, we first meet the characters: they have amnesia and look innocent at first. Then as the story progress, the darkness starts bubbling through the cracks. They play a game with Death that already has won anyway; this is just to decide their fate: Void or Reincarnation. It has the elements of dealing with choices and consequences, this time after death. It may sound like a horror story but it is more a story of cause and effect, a moral commentary on humanity.

May 2020 Railwars!

Railwars! is set on a parallel world where Japan never privatized its national railways. A high school boy, Naohito Takayama dreams of a future where he will work for the Japanese National Railways in comfort.

He gets assigned with three other high schoolers in the Railways Security Force which includes Aoi Sakurai, a troublemaking girl and man-hater. And to add to his problems there is also an extremist group called ‘RJ’ plotting to privatize the Japanese National Railways.

April 2020 Diabolic Lovers

In the anime Yui Komori goes to live in a secluded mansion at her father’s request, a mansion which happens to be the home of the six Sakamaki brothers – Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, and Subaru – a family of vampiric sexy vampire boys. The boys are very confused at the start of the series as to why a beautiful girl arrived, until it is realized that Yui is their ‘sacrificial bride’. Add to that the fact that the boys keep getting hungry for her blood and you can imagine the twist and turns this story will take. Will she survive the fanged family’s lust for blood? Will she stay human or become a creature of the night. Join us this month, darklings, for Diabolik Lovers.

March 2020 Accel World

Accel World tells the tale of Haruyuki Arita, an overweight middle schooler who is often bullied about his weight. He finds sanctuary in playing online games and he is the best there, it is the place where he truly shines. One day he discovers that all his high scores have been topped by Kuroyukihime, who just happens to be the vice-president of the student council and the most beautiful girl in the school. He is invited by her to the student council and she introduces him to the game ‘Brain Burst’ (The game allows gamers to accelerate their brain waves to a point where time seems to stop. It functions as an augmented reality game, and to help yourself to accelerate more you must win duels against other players to get more points. The catch: if you lose all your points you lose access to Brain Burst forever.)

February 2020: Deadman Wonderland

A massive anomaly caused a great earthquake that ravaged Japan’s mainland destroying most of Tokyo, sinking three-quarters of the city into the Pacific Ocean.

Ten years later. What seems to be a normal day for Ganta Igarashi and his classmates, preparing to go on a class field trip to a certain prison amusement park called Deadman Wonderland, turns into a deadly horror, flipping Ganta’s life upside down. His whole class gets massacred by a mysterious man in red. Ganta is framed for the incident and sentenced to death, and sent to the very jail he was supposed to visit. Ganta’s nightmare is only just beginning.

January 2020: Erased

The story follows Satoru Fujinuma, a young man possessing a special ability known as ‘Revival’. The ability sends him back in time moments before a life-threatening incident which gives him a chance to prevent the event from happening. Then a major tragedy strikes: His mother is murdered and his ability sends him back eighteen years into the past when he was still in Elementary school. This gives him a chance to prevent a kidnapping incident that ended up in the death of three of his childhood friends, and by preventing this crime also leads him to save his mother.

December 2019: Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori is about four young men that run a Japanese Style Tea-house named Rokuhoudou together.  They are not just skilled in their work, and exceptional at hospitality, they also like to help their patrons with their worries. Every episode has an endearing story about a customer who is in peril or need saving, whether it is a shy man in love or and over-worked salaryman, our four culinary heroes always finds the solution.

November 2019: Uninhabited Planet Survive

Planet Earth is uninhabitable (we finally over polluted our world) and mankind is forced to survive by colonizing the surrounded planets like Mars and planetary moons. We join Luna, who has been living alone with Chako, her pet robot cat, since her father died in an accident (we also learn that her mother died two years before that). Along with six of her classmates, as well as Chako, Luna finds herself stranded on an alien planet, after a school trip goes horribly wrong. Since they grew up surrounded with technology with no real knowledge of living in the wild, these kids are faced with challenges including finding food, water and shelter as well as staying alive until rescue comes – if it ever does.

October 2019: Supernatural The Animation

If you don’t know of the series Supernatural, which is entering their 15th and final season this year, you need a whole lot of catching up to do. The series is about two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester who grow up to become demon hunters after a demon murders their mother.

September 2019: Muteki Kanban Musume

Muteki Kanban Musume is a food/comedy anime about the adventures of Miki Onimaru, a 20-year-old young woman whose mother runs a Chinese ramen restaurant. Miki is the delivery girl for her mother’s eatery but because of her boisterous and over active personality Miki gets into trouble frequently, which can be quite hilarious to see.

August 2019: Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

Very loosely continuing the story from Full Metal Panic the story takes place half a year after Full Metal Panic. Sousuke Sagara is tasked with protecting a valuable target Kaname Chidori and has to juggle that with trying to fit in with the society of Jindai High School. He employs interesting technology and combat training facing thugs and gangsters set on kidnapping and torturing Chidori. This series also focus on the bond formed between him and his charge.

July 2019 - Prince Of Tennis

The anime tells the tale of Ryoma Echizen, a tennis prodigy and son of a ‘former tennis rock-star’, which made the world and his peers dub him The prince of Tennis. In the anime Ryoma attends the Seishun Gakuen (Seigaku for short), a school known for its strong tennis club and talented players. It shows how despite being a prodigy, Ryoma finds his own style of tennis, and also chronicles his fellow club members journeys to discover their own styles and paths. It is a coming of age anime well worth the watch, and even if tennis is not your thing, you may find that Prince of Tennis is.

June 2019: Coyote Ragtime Show

Pirate King Bruce has been murdered by Madame Marciano, boss of the galactic criminal guild. He left behind a treasure of ten billion space dollars to his young daughter Franca which is hidden somewhere in a vault on the planet Graceland. There is a problem however, the planet is in a state of civil war and the president of the Milky Watt threatens to blow the planet up within a week. It is up to notorious space pirate Mister and his trusty sidekicks Bishop and Katana and his rival Swamp to ‘rescue’ the inheritance!

May 2019 - Nana

The anime series’ name take inspiration from its two main characters who are both Nana by name. Small town girl Nana Komatsu follows her boyfriend to Tokyo, hoping to live her dream life while the other Nana, Nana Osaki used to be a member of a popular punk rock band in her home town and now finds her in the city of Tokyo with the goal of making it big as a vocalist. These two Nanas meet on the train to Tokyo, and later run into each other again when they happen to check out the same apartment and decide that they must be room mates.

April 2019 - Arakawa Under the Bridge

The anime, set in Arakawa, Tokyo tells the tale of Kou Ichinomiya, a self-accomplished man. He is a man which lives by his father’s rule that his father imprinted on him since childhood:’Never be indebted to another person.’ Then an even happen which conflicts with that rule. You see, he falls into the Arakawa River and he almost drowns. Luckily a girl named Nino rescues him and in return he owes her his life. Because of his father’s in-bedded rule he cannot accept and he asks her a way for him to pay that debt. After relentlessly trying to get her to name a payment for his debt, she tells him to love her, and so Kou’s bizarre life starts of living under a bridge. To top that, he discovers that Arakawa is a world of weirdos!!

March 2019 - Koufuku Graffiti

Ryo Machiko is a second-year middle school girl who has been living alone since her grandmother passed away. She is an exceptional cook but feels that her own cooking does not taste good. Then she met up with her second cousin, Kirin Morino, who starts to stay with Ryo over weekends while attending cram school in Tokyo. Will Kirin convince Ryo that she is a great cook?

February 2019 - Red Data Girl

Red Data Girl tells the story of 15-year old Izumiko Suzuhara, a girl who was raised at the Tamakura shrine, shrine that is part of the Kumano Shrines World Heritage Site. Izumiko has the ability to destroy any electrical device she touches. She is a shy teen-ager with a dream to live in the city so her guardian Yukimasa Sagara suggests that she enrols at Hojo High School in Tokyo where his son Miyuki is also a student. One day while Izumiko is on a middle school field trip, a deity named Himegami appears to her. She learns that she is a yorishiro, a vessel for a kami. She also finds out that because of that Miyuki has been tasked with protecting her.

January 2019 - Aggretsuko

This musical comedy tells the tale of an anthropomorphic red panda named Retsuko. She works in the accounting department of a Japanese trading firm and is 25 years old. Our single red panda heroine faces pushy superiors and annoying co-workers on a daily basis and rather than taking out her frustrations on them, she let’s loose her emotions by going to a karaoke bar every night to sing death metal. But after 5 years of torment… er… working the daily grind, her unhappiness causes her to experience a series of events that may cause her job, causing her to change her relationships with her co-workers and transforming her life in unexpected ways.

December 2018 - Shokugeki no Soma

In the anime we first see Souma working with his dad at the family’s restaurant. His father decides to enroll Souma into an elite culinary school, Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute that is difficult to enter and the graduation rate is only 10%! The school campus is a wide-range elite resort boasting many research societies, cooking classrooms and large arenas exclusively for cooking competitions. Will Souma survive this school? Will he become the best cooking duelists between his peers?

November 2018 - The Devil Is a Part-Timer!

The anime tells the story of the Satan, Demon Lord, set to conquer the world of Ente Isla with the help of his demon generals Alciel, Lucifer, Malacoda, and Adramelech. But then the hero Emilia and her companions kills Malacoda and Ardramelech and Satan and Alciel escapes the world through a gate to modern day Tokyo, Japan! Because of the lack of magic in this modern world they change their shapes into something more human and Satan takes a part time job in a fast food restaurant named MgRonald. Satan, now known as Sadao Mao one day meets a girl who is actually Emilia in the form of Emi Yusa. A whole new adventure awaits the ex-dark-lord-turned-part-timer and his friends. Join us for this exciting challenge this month as we explore just how good Satan is at a fast food worker!

October 2018 - Kyoukai no Kanata

The series starts with Akihito Kanbara saving his school friend Mirai Kuriyama from committing suicide. All of a sudden Mirai stabs him with a sword formed from her own blood! That is how it is discovered that Akihito is an immortal. He is a half-youmi, the offspring of a youmi, supernatural entity and a human. Akihito learns that Mirai is a Ikaishi, a spirit world warrior, a special warrior that protects humans from being affected by youmu. He discovers that Mirai is the last surviving member of her spirit hunting clan. Akihito becomes Mirai’s world as he helps her to gain confidence to kill youmu (and to hopefully stop her for trying to kill him for practice!)

September 2018 - Zero no Tsukaima

Zero no Tsukaima (The Familiar of Zero) is an anime based on a series of fantasy/comedy light novels by Noboru Yamaguchi. Over 20 volumes were published between 2004 and 2011 at Media Factory, and the light novel was sadly left unfinished due to the author’s death in 2013. In 2016 – 2017 the light novel series was concluded in two volumes by different author who used notes left behind by Noboru Yamaguchi.

The anime tells the tale of Louise, a girl of noble stock who is bad at magic. This caused her to be nicknamed “Louise the Zero” by her class mates. Now at her school the Tristain Academy of Magic, there comes a time when the students can summon their familiars, but when Louise summons her she summons Saito Hiraga, a Japanese student from Japan instead!!! Will Saito find his way back to his world? Will Louise learn to control her magic? Join us on this epic challenge in September and let’s find out together.

August 2018 - Brynhildr in the Darkness

Brynhildr in the Darkness (Gokukoku no Brynhildr) is based on the manga Gokukoku no Brynhildr written and illustrated by Lynn Okamoto, which began its serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump in 2012. The manga series ended in 2016. The 13-episode anime series premiered between April and June 2014.

The plot starts ten years ago, when childhood friends Ryouta Murakami and Kuroneko set out to proof the existence of alien life. But a tragedy strikes; there is an accident which gravely injured Ryouta and kills Kuroneko. In memory of his dear friend, Ryouta now searches the night sky every night in the hope that his friend was right about the existence of aliens.

July 2018 - Outbreak Company

For our July anime challenge the anime is Outbreak Company. It tells the tale of Shin’ichi Kanō, a recluse otako that takes an online exam for a job. Being very knowledgeable on anime, manga and videos he passed the test and meets his new employer. He is drugged and kidnapped and wakes up on another world, a fantasy world.  Shin’chi is then informed that the Japanese government selected him to help improve Japan’s relation with the new world by establishing a company to spread the unique products of Japanese (otaku) Culture to this new, unexplored market.

The Outbreak Company anime ran from October to December 2013. It was produced by Feel and directed by Kei Oikawa. The anime is based on the Outbreak Company: Moeru Shinryakusha (. Outbreak Company: The Moe Invader) light novel series written by Ichirō Sakaki, with illustrations by Yūgen, of which 18 volumes was published from December 2011 to August 2017 by Kodansha.

June 2018 - Hakuouki Reimeiroku

Hakuouki Reimeiroku Is the third in a series of a three season anime, but it is a prequel to the first two seasons. The whole series consists of Hakuoki, Hakuoki: Hekketsuroku (second season) anime and Hakuoki: Reimeiroku (third season and prequel). 

The anime takes us to the year 1863, Japan is victim to violent waves of street clashes and murder and the Tokugawa Shogunate sends the Roshigumi, a new force of masterless samurai to aid the Aizu forces in Kyoto.  This new ‘police’ force is split between two opposing factions, respectively led by Serizawa Kamo and Isami Kondo. A man named Ryunosuke Ibuki, forced to be a slave by blood debt hates the samurai and what they stand for, and hopes that there will be a chance for both himself and Japan, if Kondo can beat the rabid Serizawa.

May 2018 - Blade & Soul

Blade & Soul tells the tale of Alka, an assassin for the Clan of the Sword. She is on a self-imposed quest to find a woman named Jin Valel, the woman who killed Alka’s master, Hon. On her journey she also encounters three strange women, each a formidable warrior herself. The anime focuses on the futility of vengeance, as well as the stubbornness that envelops one when you know better but instead follows down the darker path.

Blade & Soul is a Japanese anime adaptation of a Korean fantasy martial-arts mmorpg which was developed by NCSOFT (Team Bloodlust). The anime aired from April to June 2014 and was directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki and Hiroshi Takeuchi, scripts was written by Atsuhiro Hamasaki. Production was done at Studio Gonzo.

April 2018 - Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) plays off in the city of Orario. In Orario there is the Dungeon – a place inhabited by an assortment of monsters, ranging from goblins to dragons. Adventurers visit the dungeon to take on these monsters, defeat them and harvest their crystal shards, which in turn are used to create magical items, or to be exchanged for currency. These adventurers all join groups which are called Familia. The Familia each have its own function, some focus on dungeon crawling while some focus on crafting items. Each of these Familia is named after and serves a resident deity.

Our story follows the adventures of 14-year-old Bell Cranel, the solo adventurer of the Hestia Familia, as well as Hestia herself, the deity of the Hestia Familia. Bell works very hard every day in the dungeon to make ends meet and to improve his skill ad adventurer. He was once saved by Ais Wallenstein, a famous and powerful swords-woman, to whom he looks up to and fell in love with. He is unaware that several girls, mortals and deities, also developed feelings for him, Hestia included…

March 2018 - Canaan

Oosawa Maria is a Japanese photographer currently working in Shanghai, China. Along with her partner Mino, she searches for potential newsworthy stories throughout the city. When strange events occur at a local festival, Maria and Mino immediately investigate. Quickly, the two are immersed in a battle between unknown masked men and a strange, white-haired woman. Just when Maria is about to be caught in the crossfire, an old friend by the name of Canaan appears and helps Maria escape. But a sinister plot over a deadly virus soon develops, and Canaan learns she must confront her past if she wants any chance at stopping the perpetrator and saving her friends.

February 2018 - Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World

Our February anime challenge is Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World, the anime that won the 2017 South African Anime Awards. It is a mystery and psychological fantasy that premiered last year in October and was produced by the anime house, Lerche.  The anime is based on the Kino no Tabi light novel series written by Keiichi Sigsawa. There was also a Kino no Tabi series in 2003, two Kino no Tabi visual novels, manga adaptations and two anime movies.
