Our anime challenge this month is Rail Wars! It is an action anime with harem elements. Rail Wars! is an anime adaptation of Rail Wars! Nihon Kokuyū Tetsudō Kōantai (lit. Rail Wars! Japanese National Railways Security Force) a Japanese light novel series written by Takumi Toyoda with illustrations by Vania 600. The anime was animated by Passione, aired between July to September 2014.
The anime is set on a parallel world where Japan never privatized its national railways. A high school boy, Naohito Takayama dreams of a future where he will work for the Japanese National Railways in comfort.
He gets assigned with three other high schoolers in the Railways Security Force which includes Aoi Sakurai, a troublemaking girl and man-hater. And to add to his problems there is also an extremist group called ‘RJ’ plotting to privatize the Japanese National Railways.

Episodes 4 – 6
Konnichiwa Minna, welcome to the second week of our Rail Wars challenge. This week we focus on our main character, Naoto Takayami and his voice actor Jun Fukuyama. Naota always wanted the peaceful life-style of a driver but by now we all know he ended up as the leader of the Fourth Guard Squad. He is a big train otaku and very knowledgable about all types of and models of trains. He is such an otaku of trains that it is a known fact that, when he was young, he nearly fainted from gastritis, after he took a picture of a passing train.
Naota’s voice actor is the talented Jun Fukuyama who was born November 26, 1978, and is known as an actor and singer. Fukuyama-sama played G in the anime Dragon Drive, and in the Clamp universe animes, he played as Kimihiro Watanuki in Tsubasa Chronicle, xxxHOLiC, xxxHOLiC Kei and Blood-C (where he played Dog which was Kimihiro Watanuki of xxxHolic in disguise). He also played Aidō Hanabusa in Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight Guilty, Kraft Lawrence in Spice and Wolf and Spice and Wolf II and Hau in Pokemon Sun & Moon. He also did dubbing roles such as Barry Allen / Flash (Grant Gustin) in the Arrowverse series The Flash and as Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) in Game of Thrones.
This week we all will watch episode 4-6 of Rail Wars! Enjoy the challenge and have a super sugoi week!
Week 3 May 18 – 24 2020
Episodes 7 – 9
Konnichiwa Minna, welcome to the week three of our Rail Wars challenge. This anime is set in an alternate universe, so let’s look at an anime that is also set in an alternate universe where the history is different than our own – FullMetal Alchemist
FullMetal Alchemist (Hagame no Renkinjutsushi)
Through the arcane science of alchemy, two brothers try to resurrect their dead mother. But something goes wrong, and the resurrection fails, exacting a high price on both brothers. Older brother, Edward Elric loses his entire right arm and part of his left leg, with his little brother Alphonse nearly dying. He’s plucked from death as Edward desperately fuses his brother’s soul to a suit of armour before passing out. Alphonse takes Edward’s body to their adoptive family, the Rockbells, who happen to be prosthetic (called automail in this world) experts, where they fit Edward with automail limbs.
After recovering and learning more about alchemy from a mysterious master, they set out on a journey to become State Alchemists. This will help Edward to do research in order to get their bodies back. When we enter the story they are looking for an important artefact called the Philosopher’s Stone, the first step into a great adventure.
FullMetal Alchemist is a great anime, which Steampunk, as well as alternate earth fans, will love. The proof is in its amazing storyline and character-building; you learn new things about the characters in every episode, making you feel as if you know them personally at the end of the series. Fans of steampunk will find the anime caters for them in a big way, with Victorian-era fashion mixed with technology throughout the story. The anime is dark at times, dealing with issues of loss, as well as raising the question if it is right to experiment on living creatures and people. Luckily it also serves up a dish of humour regularly to make sure the viewer does not succumb to the more sombre aspects.
This week we all will watch episode 7 – 9 of Rail Wars! Enjoy the challenge and have a super sugoi week!
