January 2021 Anime Challenge: Omamori Himari

Our anime challenge for January is Omamori Himari, often shortened by its fanbase as OmaHima. It is based on the manga series written and illustrated by Milan Matra. The manga ran from June 2006 to September 2013 in Fujimi Shobo’s Monthly Dragon Age. The 12-episode anime was adapted by Zexcs and aired in Japan in the winter of 2010.

This romantic comedy with harem and supernatural elements centres around 16-year-old orphan Youto Amakawa, a boy protected by the spirit of a beautiful, sword-wielding samurai catgirl named Himari. See Youto is descendant of a family Demon Slayers since the feudal eras in Japan and Himari is his new guardian and she swore an oath to protect him from evil. Oh, and by the way, he is allergic to cats…

Week 1 January 4 – January 10, 2021

Episode 1 – 3

It’s week 1 of our Omamori Himari challenge. The main character in Omamori Himari is Yuto Amakawa, voiced by Daisuke Hirakawa. In the anime, he is a student at Touryou High School in Takamiya city. He is the sole descendant of the Amakawa family, one of twelve Demon Slayer families. When he was eight years old his parents died in a car crash. He has terrible cat allergies, which cause Yuto’s eyes to water, his nose to run and he sneezes uncontrollably. This fact is very important to our story but we will not spoil the story for you.

Voice actor Daisuke Hirakawa who plays Yuto was born on June 4th, 1973 in Niigata prefecture. He is sometimes mistaken for fellow voice actor Daisuke Namikawa, as their names differ by one character when written in kanji. Hirakawa is the official dub voice actor for Orlando Bloom, making him Orlando’s voice in movies like the Lord of The Rings trilogy and Pirates of the Caribbean. He also voiced Keanu Reeves character, Jonathan Harker, in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (15th Anniversary Edition). Some of his anime roles include Yūsuke Shīki (BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad), Albert Waldstein (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Sword Oratoria) and Enmu in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

We hope you enjoyed our Omamori Himari trivia and enjoy our challenge. Have a super sugoi week!

Week 2 January 11 – January 17, 2021

Episode 4 – 6

Konnichiwa Minna. Welcome to week 2 of the Omamori Himari challenge. Let’s talk about Zexcs. Zexcs is the anime house which brought us Omamori Himari. The studio is located in Koganei, Tokyo Japan and was established in January of 1998 by the former J.C. Staff producer Tomoko Kawasaki. One of the anime Zexcs produced which you may recognise was Diabolik Lovers which was our April 2020 Challenge. For those who have not seen the anime or did not do the Diablik Lovers challenge, here is more about the anime.

In the anime Yui Komori goes to live in a secluded mansion at her father’s request, a mansion which happens to be the home of the six Sakamaki brothers – Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, and Subaru – a family of vampiric sexy vampire boys. The boys are very confused at the start of the series as to why a beautiful girl arrived, until it is realized that Yui is their ‘sacrificial bride’. Add to that the fact that the boys keep getting hungry for her blood and you can imagine the twist and turns this story will take. Will she survive the fanged family’s lust for blood? Will she stay human or become a creature of the night.

We hope you are enjoying the challenge and that you will take a peek at Diabolik Lovers if you have not watched it yet. Have a super sugoi week, minna!

Week 4 January 25 – January 31, 2021

Episode 10 – 12

Konnichiwa Minna, this last week of the challenge we are going to look at a harem anime since Omamori Himari is a harem anime. This time we focus on the harem anime Shuffle!

Shuffle! plays off in a world where humanity lives in harmony with gods (who look like humans with slightly pointed ears) and devils (with more prominent elongated ears). Both the gods and devils in the series are not the stereotypes we are used to, they are equally kind and good-natured. At the start of the anime, it has been ten years since the portal between the worlds has been opened and people from all races started emigrating between the worlds. Our characters Lisianthus, Nerine and Rin attend the multi-racial high school National Verbena Academy. It is part of a plan to let humans, gods and devils can learn to interact and help all races to learn to live in harmony and not in hatred, fear, prejudice and ignorance.

Shuffle! is a 24-episode anime, directed by Naota Hosoda and ran from July 2005 to January 2006. If you love harem with a slightly dark twist it may just be for you, Have a super sugoi week and enjoy the rest of our challenge.
