December Anime Challenge: Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori

Our December anime challenge is a feel-good anime, filled with life lessons, Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori. It is based on the Japanese manga series by Yū Shimizu. It was adapted into an anime series by Zexcs and aired in Japan From April 10th to June 26th 2018.

Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori is about four young men that run a Japanese Style Tea-house named Rokuhoudou together. The staff consists Sui who is the owner in charge of the tea, Gre who is in charge of the Latte Art, Tsubaki who is in charge of sweets and desserts and Tokitaka who is in charge of the food. They are not just skilled in their work, and exceptional at hospitality, they also like to help their patron with their worries. Every episode has an endearing story about a customer who is in peril or need saving, whether it is a shy man in love or and over-worked salaryman, our four culinary heroes always finds the solution.

Konnichiwa Minna, welcome to our new challenge Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori, let’s meet one of the characters and his voice actor! Kyousui Tougoku, fondly known as Sui by everyone is the shop owner and manager of the Rokuhoudou Tea-House. He used to be an office worker but quit the job to open the Tea-House which he inherited from his grandfather. He learned the art and secrets of making perfect tea from his grandfather and it made him THE elite tea expert. He can be clueless but is actually a very sharp-minded and levelheaded person, He may be a tea genius but he sucks at cooking, his cooking is feared by everyone. He is a passionate about cats and has a pet cat named Kinako which he found as a stray. He has a twin brother, but although he wish they can be closer, he and his twin are not on speaking terms.

Sui’s voice actor is Junichi Suwabe, a voice actor and singer which hails from Tokyo. He was born March 29, 1973 and affiliated with Haikyō. Junichi nominated for a Best Singing Award at the 6th Seiyu Awards, and received a Best Supporting Actor award at the 7th Seiyu Awards. Some of his voice acts include Victor Nikiforov in Yuri!!! on ICE, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez in Bleach, Undertaker in Black Butler, Takashi Komuro in Highschool of the Dead, Greed in Fullmetal Alchemist, Deathstroke in Batman Ninja and Koji Fujiyoshi in Great Teacher Onizuka.

Week 2 - 9th December to 15th December 2019

Konnichiwa Minna, as we enter week two of our Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori challenge, let’s meet another of the characters and his voice actor! This week we meet Tokitaka Nagae, main chef at Rokuhodo. He was in the same middle school as Sui and was popular for his pottery skill since a young age. Initially he help’s Sui with some tableware for Rokuhodo, but decides to join the business, becoming one of Rokuhodo’s first employees. He is gentle natured and often give the elderly retired that are regulars at Rokuhodo pottery lessons. He also decides the main menu for the eatery.

Tokitaka’s voice actor is Yuichi Nakamura. Nakamura was born February 20th 1980 and is affiliated with Sigma Seven. Some of his voice acts in anime series include Gray Fullbuster in Fairy Tail, Mumen Rider in One Punch Man, Nobutaka Oda in Btooom!, Greed in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Alto Saotome in Macross Frontier, Tomoya Okazaki in Clannad, Kyosuke Kosaka in Oreimo, Tsukasa Shishio in Dr.Stone,  and Sohma Shigure in Fruits Basket (2019). He also voice acted in various games such as Cid Raines in Final Fantasy XIII and Fei Long in Street Fighter IV and also did live-action dubbing roles for Chris Evans in Captain America film series, as well for Liam Hemsworth in Hunger Games film series.

Week 3 - 16th December to 22th December 2019

Konnichiwa Minna, it is our third week of our challenge and we visit another character of Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori this week, Gregorio “Gure” Valentino. Gure is Rokuhoudou’s barista. (A barista is usually the person who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks at a coffee-house). He learned his trade in Italy, where he also grew up. He was an angry teen but after being taken in by an Italian Barista, he changed into to person we have all come to love in the anime. He returned from Italy to Japan, his father’s motherland. His coffee is amazingly delicious but his latte art is very iffy, which cause for funny moments in the anime. Gure is a cheerful, outgoing person, and often have friendly arguments with Tsubaki.

Gure is voiced by Daisuke Ono. Daisuke was born on May 4, 1978. He is a talented voice actor and singer, known for winning the 4th and 9th Seiyu Awards for best lead actor for his highly memorable roles as Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler, Jotaro Kujo in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Shukuro Tsukishima in Bleach and the “Best Personalities” at the 9th Seiyu Awards. Some of his other roles include Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan, Toki in Naruto, Keiji Onizuka in Terra Formars, William Vengeance in Black Clover, Yumikage Tsukimitsu in Servamp, Subaru Asahina in Brothers Conflict series, Killer T Cell in Cells at Work! and Helmutt Felt in BEM. He hosts radio show Dear Girl Stories along with voice actor Hiroshi Kamiya.
