Ten Winter Season 2018 Anime Recommendations
Japan is entering its winter season. Blankets of snow turn the world into a winter wonderland. Winter is magic to those that embrace it. In a snow-covered wintery Japan, some of the best ways to keep warm in the magical season are to visit an Onsen, relax under a Kotatsu or curl up and watch new anime! The winter of 2018 brings us some great anime returns, as well as very interesting new series. Here are AnimeFanatika’s list of recommendations.
Fate/Extra: Last Encore
Haruko wakes up in a strange virtual world, with no memories of the past and is forced to fight for survival in a war he does not understand. With a ‘servant’ at his side, he has to fight to the death and get the Holy Grail, the only item which may be the only solution to all his problems. Will this new installment of the Fate franchise be as epic as all the other series?
Ryuuichi (a high schooler) and Kotarou Kashima (a toddler) lose their parents in a plane crash and find themselves living with the chairwoman of the Morinomiya family, who herself lost her son and his wife in the plane crash. She will allow the siblings to live in her house on one condition: Ryuuichi has to work at the academy’s daycare center as a babysitter.
Hakumei to Mikochi
The tale of two tiny girls (9 cm tall in fact), Hakumei and Mikochi and their lives in the forest. They live in a tiny house in a tree, use insects and birds for transportation and make umbrellas out of leaves. This series follows their story in a fantastic world of tine people and Gods.
It is based on the manga written by Shinya Murata and illustrated by Kazasa Sumita. It tells the tale of an ordinary college student Yuuya Nomoto that gets tangled into the world of human/animal hybrid battles because he accidentally witnesses a duel between Hitomi Uzaki, also known as Honey Badger and a humanoid in an isolated scrapyard. These human-animal hybrids (aka ‘Bruto’) have secretly been used by four of the wealthiest financial groups to settle scores since the ancient days. Now Yuuya and Hitomi find themselves right in the middle of the drawn into the depths of this age-old conflict.
Juri Yukawa’s nephew and brother are kidnapped for ransom, but she realizes that with only 30 minutes to pay the ransom there is just not enough time to gather the money to pay the ransom demand. She decides to go and rescue them herself armed with a knife. Then her grandfather uses a mysterious stone to stop time!!!!
Miira no Kaitaka (How To Keep a Mummy)
When a self-proclaimed ‘adventurer’ sends his son an over-sized package, the last thing the son would expect is for the gift to open from the inside. And what opened the package, a mummy… the size of the palm of the boy’s hand!!!!
How can you keep a mummy? Perhaps mummy knows best…
Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san
Mysterious, attractive high schooler Koizumi is in secret a ramen master, always on the lookout for great ramen restaurants. She hunts for real-life ramen joints every day and eats the largest bowl ramen with such delight that will put any large man to shame.
A change of career compels 20-year-old Michiru Amatsuki to move to Tokyo, where she decides to live in a woman-only share house named ‘Stella House Haruno’. It is a place where women of different ages and occupations dwell, a place filled with great food and delicious alcohol!
Toji no Miko
The anime is set in a world where sword-wielding Miko (shrine maidens) called ‘Toji’ have been protecting mankind from fantastical beasts. Now in modern times these sword yielding shrine amazons are part of a special police organization which allows these lovely ladies to carry swords and to train at five specialized schools scattered all throughout Japan. The anime’s protagonist is Kanami Eto, a girl with a dream to prove herself worthy at the annual tournament where the five schools gather to test the Toji’s skills.
Long ago, Professor Orland invented a new type of printing machine for his novelist wife, Molly who lost her eyesight. The machine had the appearance of a lovely petite doll and was called the ‘Auto Memories Doll’. Such dolls became widespread, supporting many lives. The term became applied to women whose work is to put thoughts into words, for those who cannot write, or to write on behalf of others. One such woman is the young girl Violet Evergarden. This series is about how she connects people’s hearts as an Auto Memories Doll.
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen
Fans of the series will remember that Sakura Kinomoto is the main character of the anime Cardcaptor Sakura. She discovers that she has magical abilities after she frees a deck of magical cards by accident from a book in which they have been sealed. She’s given the task to catch the cards in order to save the world from an unspecified impending doom. In this new series Sakura is now in middle school and have strange dreams, perhaps forewarning her about dark days ahead.
The Overlord anime ran for 13 episodes in 2015 and was a massive hit. It plays off in the year 2137 and tells the tale of Momonga. When his favourite game, Yggdrasil is shut down he decides to not log out of it. NPCs start to feel emotions and other changes start to occur in this world. Momonga decides to take over this new world. Now it returns for a second season!
