The Island that is a ghost

Not many countries can boast that they have a ghost island… picture this.

Hashima Island (also known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island). In the 1890s to 1970s it was a town built to house coal workers and their families. In the 1960s all over Japan coalmines started to shut down as petroleum replaced coal, Hashima’s mines were also affected. 1974 there was no choice but to shut the island’s mines down and people started leaving the island. Today it is bare and empty… and seen as a ghost island.

Gunkanjima is known as the site of Japan’s first large concrete building. It is a landmark in Japanese history, abandoned and was off limits to visitors and tourists for 35 years. However travel to the island was re-opened on April 22, 2009.

Here is an awesome music video by B’z called My Lonely Town… the video was shot on Hashima Island. This is Sugoi!
