A Festive Snowy Special!
As autumn slowly ends, already there is snow in some areas of Japan, changing the scenery into magical white wonderlands. We look at a candied sweet potato recipe, quite loved in the Autumn and Winter seasons, we learn some snowy Japanese Words, look at the Disney Christmas Parade, listen to a snow-inspired AMV and look at our anime challenge for December. We also pay tribute to manga and comic legend Stan Lee and look at some anime news from the past month. Whether you have a hot Christmas in the summer, or a cold snowy autumn or winter Christmas we wish you season greetings. May you get to chillax, in good company and great food. Itadakimasu!!!
Anime this past month
Merc Storia – Mukiryoku Shounen to Bin no Naka no Shoujo is a cute anime where a boy named Yuu travels with a girl (in a jar!!!) named Merc, exploring their world and healing monster that sometimes looks like a cross between the Pokemon Eevee and a Digimon. It is perfect for anime fanatiks that are into cutesy adventure fantasy anime. Similar but different is the anime Radiant, where sorcerers are scorned but they are the only ones that can defeat creatures called Nemesis. A youth named Seth set out to defeat these Nemesis but also to change humanity’s outlook on sorcerers. It is a great anime that tackles themes like prejudice and social-profiling while taking us on a fantastic journey in a beautiful world.
The official website for the upcoming anime series Blackfox streamed a promotional video earlier this month showcasing the show’s three main cast members. The site also revealed character designs and the show’s story.
“Living in a ninja residence tucked away in a corner of a futuristic city is Rikka, the eldest daughter of a Ninja clan, who looks up to her father—a researcher—very much.
Carrying on with her life normally, Rikka’s home came suddenly under attack one day. Driven into a corner, what would she do to overcome this crisis?
Rip darkness to pieces and become “BLACK”!”
The series will star Ayaka Nanase, Haruka Tomatsu, and Yō Taichi. The chief director of the project is Kazuya Nomura ( Robotics;Notes) at Studio 3Hz ( Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online) and other staff include Keisuke Shinohara Kiznaiver) as director, Naoki Hayashi (Cirtus) as scriptwriter, Atsushi Saito (High School Fleet) as character designer and Fumihiro Katagi (Princess Principal) as mechanical designer. The anime is produced by Infinite (Grimoire of Zero)
On May 10, 2019, a new movie will be released that had the internet buzzing, Detective Pikachu. The same week the movie’s trailer has been released it amassed over 60 million views on Youtube, that we know off, while Toy Story 4 only amassed 14 million views, giving you a scale of reference just how anticipated this movie is. Now we all know that the Pokémon Pikachu has always been the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, but Detective Pikachu is an entirely different character that was introduced in the Nintendo 3DS game, Detective Pikachu.
When watching the trailer, the Pokémon all look very lifelike and after looking at how many Pokémon we can visibly already recognise Pokemon like Psyduck, Fearow, Charmander, Dodrio, Emolga, Audino, Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Charizard, Squirtle and Rufflet, to name a few. Who knows maybe all of the 800 Pokémon in the franchise might make cameos!
If you think of the success of the new Pokémon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee games are having and the fact that the trailer for the movie is doing so well, it is easy to predict that this movie could easily dominate the box-office in May and be a monster big hit. Yes, there will most definitely be Pokémon fanatiks out there that will be a sceptic or two because of certain live-action failures, but maybe the trailer will change their minds!
The comic book, as well as anime community, were shocked earlier in November with news of comic book writer, actor, publisher and editor Stan Lee’s passing. To all that he touched he was a superhero in his own right. Mr Lee passed away on November 12 at Cedars-Sianai Medical Centre in Los Angeles due to heart-related problems.
Mr Lee, in collaboration with various comic book talents at Marvel Comics, co-created numerous popular comic characters such Spider-Man, the X-Men, The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, The Ant-Man and Scarlet Witch. In the 1990s he ‘retired’ but remained a figurehead for Marvel, and appeared in various films and TV series based on Marvel characters, as well as non-Marvel related series and movies. He was also involved in Manga. Some of his manga projects include Heroman and Karakuri Dôji Ultimo and he even wrote a live-action musical called The Yin and Yang Battle of Tao. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995. He also received the NEA’s National Medal of Arts in 2008.
Some of his roles in movies and TV Series include Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Ant-Man (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1, Agent Carter season 1, Mallrats, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, The Big Bang Theory and Heroes. He will live on through his legacy. Stan Lee will and cannot be forgotten.
Tidbits from the realms of anime
Kawaii Kulture – Disney Christmas Parade
At Tokyo Disneyland, just as at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, there is a Disney Christmas Parade each year. As you know there is a great Christmas spirit in Japan every year. They may celebrate Christmas for other reasons than countries where it is a Christian holiday but their Christmases are just as magical and peaceful and very, very romantic.
Couples just love to make their date-night at Tokyo Disneyland, especially weekends, and that is when the place is at it’s busiest, so if you prefer your excursions to attractions and parks a little less populated, it is best to go there on weekdays. There are many attractions at the event like the Country Bear Christmas and the Disney Chrismas Stories, which IS the parade. Imagine elaborate costumes, sugoi floats and fun and elegant characters to get lost into.
Another attraction that is very popular is Starbright Christmas, the fireworks show which runs at night. It is cancelled 50% of the time, but if and when it runs it is 5 minutes of firework magic to wake up that sleeping inner child in you to be enchanted by the spectacular lights in the sky. It also has a great soundtrack to add to the magic.
There are oodles of fun to explore like Santa’s village, Space Mountain and more. It has something for everyone. It is a place of enchantment, a great place for memories that will stay with you forever.
Spread the word: Snowy words
Watch enough subbed anime and you learn that ‘yuki’ means snow, but let explore more snowy words and take up our Japanese vocabulary a notch.
大雪 oo yuki – It means heavy snowfall. ‘OO’ means ‘big’ or ‘great’ referring to the quantity of snow.
人工雪 jin kou yuki – artificial snow. Attaching JINKOU in a sentence basically means it is man-made
初雪 hatsu yuki – the first snow of the season. As you know by now, the Japanese have a fondness for things that happen first, like the first Sakura blossom falling or first snow. For events like that they have the word HATSU, example Hatsu Yume, the first dream of the year, or HATSU MIMI, something heard for the first time.
Word of the month – Sunōfurēku スノーフレーク
Sunōfurēku means snowflake!
Recipe of the Month: Sweet Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes is a comfort food, and in Japan, it is a seasonal Autumn food. They love it so much that there is even a Sweet Potato Kit Kat flavour! It is perfect for colder weather since it is a great source for vitamin A (Beta-carotene, vitamin C, manganese, copper, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, potassium, dietary fibre, niacin, vitamins B1 and B2 as well as phosphorus. In short, it a very very good for you!
Our recipe this month is Candied Sweet Potato, a perfect dish for Christmas for that sweet tooth! These candies, according to the chef is called Daigaku Imo (大学芋), literally meaning “University Potatoes” in Japan apparently because it was a popular dish at universities in Tokyo during the early 1900s. This dish is still very popular and can be found at many school festivals and food stands during autumn, so let’s find out how to make them in the video below!
AMV of the Month: One Step from Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
Since our theme for the bento is snow, an AMV with a snow-related story is just the thing. Our AMV this month is ‘One Step’ from the anime Sora yori mo Tooi Basho (A Place Further Than The Universe). This anime is an empowering and captivating story about four girls on a brave journey to a place few would dare to go to, Antarctica. Mari Tamaki is in her second year of high school and feels that she wasted her life, she does not want her youth to go to waste and she wants to accomplish something, yet she has something in her that stops her from taking that one step out of her comfort zone. Then she has a chance encounter with a girl with an inspiring dream named Shirase Kobuchizawa.
Inspired by her mother’s disappearance in Antarctica, Shirase has been working very hard to fund her trip to the ice continent. She had to endure hardships and ridicule, but her determination kept her mojo running to achieve her goal. This inspires Mari to join her on her quest. Soon the bubbly Hinata Miyake and the polite Yuzuki Shiraishi joins them and they together work toward the goal to sail to the frozen southern continent. The anime is inspiring and will touch you deep in your heart. Yes, you will weep, yes you will laugh and at the end feel as if you gained something. This anime is that good.
Birthday of the Month: Hogback (One Piece)
December 19th marks the birthday of the world-renowned surgeon Dr.Hogback from One Piece. This medical genius made is debut in Chapter 446 of the Manga and Episode 340 of the anime. He is known as working being in the employ of Gekko Moriah, whom he assisted in creating an undead army. This bad doctor is one of the Mysterious Four and one of the main antagonists of One Piece’s Thriller Bark Saga.
Arrogant and proud of his reputation as a genius, he has always seen patients as an irritation and just put up with them for their money. He has a disregard for human life, but ironically he is a genius level surgeon, performing medical miracles with his skill. He saved countless lives which brought him incredible fame and fortune. These skills made him being recruited by Gecko Moriah, who tasked Hogback with creating the countless zombified minions on the island of Thriller Bark.
Like so many others in One Piece, he has a unique laugh: “Fosfosfosfos”, which has a creepiness to it. It is suspected that his character is a homage to Dr Victor Frankenstein, a famous fictional demented scientist also obsessed with returning the dead to life.
Dr Hogback shared his birthday with super sugoi anime characters like on December 3 – Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop), December 14 – Ciel Phantomhive (Black Butler), December 20 – Kaneki Ken (Tokyo Ghoul) and on December 24 – Tony Tony Chopper (One Piece).
December Anime Challenge – Shokugeki no Soma
We start a brand new challenge this month! Last month’s anime challenge was The Devil Is a Part-Timer! We hope you enjoyed the Supernatural Harem anime as much as we did. This month’s anime is perfect for December, because when we say December one of the words that pop up is Food. Our challenge is Shokugeki no Soma, a food anime that will leave us hungry for more! The anime’s first season ran from April to September 2015 and is inspired by the shonen manga written by the mangaka Yuto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki, with the help of Yuki Morisaki, who contributed the recipes for the series. The anime also had a second and third series and is very popular.
In the anime, we first see Souma working with his dad at the family’s restaurant. His father decides to enrol Souma into an elite culinary school, Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute that is difficult to enter and the graduation rate is only 10%! The school campus is a wide-range elite resort boasting many research societies, cooking classrooms and large arenas exclusively for cooking competitions. Will Souma survive this school? Will he become the best cooking duelists between his peers?
Disclaimer: Shokugeki no Soma is an anime filled with fanservice such as ecchi, viewer’s discretion is advised.
