Sword Art Online Movie and Game slated for 2017
That Sword Art Online craving getting to you? Don’t worry, because at the Dengeki Bunko Aki no Saiten 2016 event on Sunday it has been confirmed that Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale will open all over Japan on February 18th next year. The film will also air all over the world, in up to 1,000 theatres to be exact, of which are 150 Japanese theatres. A new trailer for the movie also debuted at the Dengeki Bunko Aki no Saiten 2016 event which introduces new characters.
In the movie, which plays off two years after the original SAO incident, a new game ‘Ordinal Scale’ is very popular among players. As strange things are happening in the game, Kirito and the gang are facing new dangers. This movie is a brand new story under the pen of Reki Kawahara (Accel World) and directed by Tomohiko Ito, who also did the two SAO anime series and the anime special at A-1 Pictures. Also returning are Shingo Adachi on character design and Yuki Kajiura, who will do the music score. The cast for the anime is also returning which include Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito, Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna, Rina Hidaka as Silica/Keiko, Ayahi Takagaki as Lisbeth/Rika, Miyuki Sawashiro as Sinon/Shino, Hiroaki Hirata as Klein/Ryotaro, Kanae Itō as Yui and Ayana Taketatsu as Leafa/Suguha.
More SAO related news revealed at the Dengeki Bunko Aki no Saiten 2016 event is the upcoming game Accel World VS Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight. This crossover game will be released in 2017 and is planned for PlayStation 4 and Vita. Such a crossover by the two franchises is not new. Both franchises, the brain children of light novelist Reki Kawahara have met in the 2011 story ‘Versus’ which was adapted to a track on the 2012 Accel World + Sword Art Online Drama CD. Accel World character Black Lotus (Kuroyukihime) also made a cameo in the game Sword Art Online: Lost Song.
