Born from a Peach into Greatness
Have you heard the legend of Momotarō? Momotarō the Peach Boy have appeared all over the world in different forms and versions but his tale starts in Japan’s Okayama Prefecture.
Imagine the scene. A giant peach is flowing down the river and catches an old, kindly childless woman’s eye, as she is busy washing clothes. She managed to catch the peach and roll it home. That night she and her husband cuts open the peach to eat it for supper and inside they discover a child! The child explains to them that he has been sending from the Heavens to be their son. The happy couple named their new son Momotarō which they got from the words momo (peach) and tarō (which means the eldest son in the family).
Years later Momotarō left his parents to fight oni (ogres) and befriended three talking animals; a dog, a monkey and a pheasant that joined him in his quest. He and his animal friend infiltrate the Oni chief’s stronghold and after a victory, they return with treasure and the captive oni chieftain to Momotarō’s home. The story ends with our hero, his friends, and parents living in comfort for the rest of their days.
