GANTZ:O to premiere in October
Last November, we reported to you that another Gantz movie is on its way this year and now we have exciting news! The first teaser for the new movie, GANTZ:O is here! GANTZ:O is a full 3DCG anime movie and is, like the anime series and the two live-action movies, based on the manga by Hiroya Oku.
If you are familiar with Gantz you will remember that Gantz is the tale of two high school students, Kei Kuronu and Masaru Kato, who are hit by a subway train while trying to get a drunken homeless man off the train track. After their death, they find themselves appearing in an unfurnished Tokyo apartment with a group of strangers. Soon they hear that they cannot leave the apartment. You see, at the end of the main room there is a large black sphere known as ‘Gantz’ and their fates depends on what that sphere has in store for them. The realization dawns on them that the afterlife can be a cruel prison. It is a very dark series that questions the futility of violence and being caught in situations beyond one’s control. It is not for the squeamish since it contains a lot of blood and gore.
The movie’s chief director is Keiichi Satou (Tiger & Bunny, Asura), and Yasushi Kawamura (Appleseed: Ex Machina) is directing the film while Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece Film Gold) is writing the screenplay. Digital Frontier is handling production. The movie is an adaptation of the Osaka arc and is set to premiere on October 14th in Japan.
The Gantz franchise started in 2000 when Oku launched the manga in Young Jump. After 37 volumes the manga ended in 2013. In 2004, a 26 episode anime series were released, which ran from April to November and in 2011 there were two live-action movies, Gantz and Gantz: Perfect Answer. Last year a new manga GANTZ-G launched in Shueisha’s Miracle Jump magazine in November.
