Sailor Moon and friends – heroes of Earth
Season: Summer Release 2014
Anime Genre: Magical Girl
Based on: Manga and the original anime series
Years ago, someone handed me a Nintendo Sailor Moon RPG game and it followed the story of the anime perfectly. I always wanted to see the anime and with the reboot I finally had a chance. Sailor Moon (the original series) inspired many Magical Girl anime like Magic Knight Rayearth and Pretty Cure. Sailor Moon is extremely popular and seen as a cult anime because it kick started the Magical Girl anime genre.
Usagi Tsukino is the leader of the Sailor Guardians and the main Protagonist. She is a careless but compassionate, understanding and empathic girl. She transform into Sailor Moon, guardian of Love and Justice. At first in the series she is a real crybaby that resents fighting evil and just wants to be a normal girl, but she soon embrace her abilities because she wants to protect those she cares about.
Mamoru Chiba is a few years older than Usagi. As a child he lost his parents and his memories in a car accident. He has some sort of psychic rapport wit Usagi and can sense when she is in danger. That ability inspires him to become the hero Tuxedo Mask and fight alongside the Sailor Guardians when needed.
Mizuno Ami is a quiet, intelligent bookworm that is in Usagi’s class. It is rumored that she has an IQ of 300. She transforms into Sailor Mercury, Guardian of Water and Wisdom. She is the tech-savvy member of the group.
Rei Hino is elegant and beautiful and a miko (shrine maiden). Due to being a miko she has precognitive abilities and can dispel evil using special Shinto scrolls. She transforms in Sailor Mars, Guardian of Fire and Passion.
Makoto Kino is also a student from Usagi’s class that has immense human strength and is unusually tall and strong for a schoolgirl. She is Sailor Jupiter, guardian of Thunder and Strength. She lived alone since both her parents died in a plane crash. She is very skilled in cooking, housekeeping, gardening and hand-to-hand combat. Despite her size and tomboyish nature she is a girly girl at heart.
Let’s break it down a little
Fanatik Warning: This part of the review has spoilers; so do not read if you do not want to know what happens…
As a 20th anniversary reboot of this classic anime, there is a lot of talk about it in the anime scene. This new installment follows the manga more closely according to my sources. It features Usagi Tsukino, a teen girl that transforms into Sailor Moon and fights with her friends to save the Earth from annihilation. As with the original Toei Animation is the studio that handled the reboot, while Munehisa Sakai is directing it. It boasts with a huge cast of characters and the core characters were mentioned above.
A scene in Episode 1 I really enjoyed is where a group of women in a zombie like state is walking toward Sailor Moon. Usagi is new to the super hero business and feels afraid, so she starts crying and wailing – the sheer power of it turns into ultrasonic waves that lead to all the windows being shattered and it dazes all the enemies.
First Episode Preview
It starts with a dream. A man and woman run into each other and kiss. An Alarm sounds suddenly and her mother downstairs yells Usagi awake. Usagi’s mother is sitting by the table and sighs as she hears Usagi moan from upstairs that she is late for school.
As Usagi dresses she calls out to her mom, ‘Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?’ She then suns out of her room and in her rush she falls down the stairs. Usagi’s mother asks if she is okay’ “I am not” she grumbles, grabs her lunchbox and tells her mom that she is leaving.
As Usagi leaves her mom sighs and says to herself: ‘I just hope you can learn from Sailor V’.
We see Usagi running to school like a madman and then the opening song starts.
When the episode continues, Usagi runs and accidentally step on a black cat. She picks it up and apologizes. She kisses the cat and it answers by scratching Usagi in the face. Usagi notices a band-aid on the cat’s forehead and removes it, and the cat jumps on a wall. There is a mark that looks like a bald spot in the form of a crescent moon on the cat’s forehead.
The meeting between the girl and the cat is a fateful one, and to learn why you simply must watch the anime!
Fanatik Overall Score: a Satisfying 8.6 out of 10
Originality/Story (10) – It may be a reboot, but the story is original and one can see why this anime is the mother of Magical Girl anime.
Animation (9) – The animation is well-drawn and special effects like the CGI transformations when the girls transforms into the Guardians are amazing
Characters (9) – Every character have a full back-story and are wonderfully crafted. One cannot help to fall in love with them.
Sound/Music (7) – The voice actors are excellent, but personally I found Usagi’s voice annoying. But I kept watching despite her voice because the anime is enjoyable. Idol group Momoiro Clover Z did a perfect job doing both the opening and ending songs and the music fits well with the anime genre.
Enjoyment value (8) – For someone not that focused on watching Magical Girl anime I really enjoyed the anime, and by the looks of it many are in agreement with me.
The anime is heavily story based but also filled with action and humor. The character growth in very good and you can really get hooked on this anime. Despite Usagi’s voice there are no other issues for me personally. I highly recommend this anime.
